Edathupuram Poonthanam Sree Krishna Temple Angadippuram Malappuram

It lies a short distance to the northeast of the renowned Thirumandhamkunnu Bhagavathi Temple. The main deity of this temple is Lord Krishna, consecrated by the great Malayalam devotional poet Poonthanam Namboothiri himself. The idol represents the divine form in which Lord Krishna appeared to Poonthanam.

Alongside the main deity, the temple also houses sub-deities including Lord Ganapati, Poorna-Pushkala Sametha (a form of Lord Shani with his consorts), Goddess Durga, and the Naga deities. The temple observes several major annual festivals with devotion and enthusiasm. These include Ashtami Rohini in the Malayalam month of Chingam (marking the birth of Lord Krishna), Vishu in Medam (celebrating the Kerala New Year), Guruvayur Ekadashi in Vrischikam (a significant fasting and prayer day), and Poonthanam Day in Kumbham (commemorating the revered poet’s spiritual legacy).

The temple is managed by a committee of devotees, ensuring its traditions and worship continue with dedication and reverence. Poonthanam Namboothiri, the renowned devotional poet known for his works such as Jnanappana and Ghanasangham, was a deeply devoted follower of Lord Guruvayoorappan. It was his lifelong habit to visit the Guruvayoor Temple every month without fail, despite the long and challenging journey. However, as he grew older, he realized that continuing these pilgrimages would no longer be possible due to his age and physical limitations. During what would become his final visit to Guruvayoor, on his return journey, he stopped to rest at a spot—now the site of the Edathupuram Poonthanam Sree Krishnaswamy Temple.

While resting there, he heard a divine voice say, “I am here, on your left side.” Turning in that direction, Poonthanam beheld the enchanting vision of Lord Krishna playing the flute. Overwhelmed with devotion and emotion, he prostrated before the Lord in reverence. To commemorate this divine experience, a temple was later established at the very spot, which is now revered as the Edathupuram Poonthanam Sree Krishnaswamy Temple. In addition, Poonthanam also installed an idol of Lord Krishna at his ancestral temple, now known as the Poonthanam Vishnu Temple. It is believed that he worshipped at both temples alternately and ultimately attained Vaikunthaloka (the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu) at the age of 93.

മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയിലെ പെരിന്തൽമണ്ണ താലൂക്കിൽ അങ്ങാടിപ്പുറം ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായതിന്റെ പരിധിയിൽ, പ്രശസ്തമായ തിരുമാന്ധാംകുന്ന് ഭഗവതിക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും കുറച്ച് അകലെ വടക്കുകിഴക്കേ ഭാഗത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ചെറുതെങ്കിലും ആധികാരികതയുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇടത്തുപുറം പൂന്താനം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രം. ഭക്തകവി പൂന്താനം നമ്പൂതിരിയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ദർശനം നൽകിയ അതേ രൂപത്തിലാണ് ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയും.

ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഗണപതി, പൂർണ്ണാ-പുഷ്കലാസമേതനായ ശാസ്താവ്, ദുർഗ്ഗാ ദേവി, നാഗദേവതകൾ എന്നിവയുടെ ഉപദേവതാപ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ആചരിക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന വാർഷിക ഉത്സവങ്ങൾ ചിങ്ങമാസത്തിലെ അഷ്ടമിരോഹിണി, മേടമാസത്തിലെ വിഷു, വൃശ്ചികമാസത്തിലെ ഗുരുവായൂർ ഏകാദശി, കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ പൂന്താനം ദിനം എന്നിവയാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രഭരണം ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ രൂപീകരിച്ച കമ്മിറ്റിയിലൂടെയാണ് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്.

ജ്ഞാനപ്പാനയും ഘനസംഘവും ഉൾപ്പെടെ അനവധി ശ്രദ്ധേയ കൃതികളുടെ രചയിതാവായിരുന്ന പൂന്താനം നമ്പൂതിരി, ശ്രീ ഗുരുവായൂരപ്പന്റെ വലിയൊരു ഭക്തനായിരുന്നു. കീഴാറ്റൂരിലുള്ള സ്വന്തം ഇല്ലത്തുനിന്ന് എല്ലാ മാസവും അകലെ ഗുരുവായൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പോകുകയും ഭക്തിപൂർവം ആരാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പതിവായിരുന്നു.കാലം കടന്നു പ്രായം കൂടിയപ്പോൾ, ഗുരുവായൂരിലേക്ക് യാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്നതെല്ലാം അസാധ്യമാകുമെന്ന് മനസ്സിലായപ്പോൾ, തന്റെ അവസാനത്തെ ഗുരുവായൂർ ദർശനത്തിനു ശേഷം തിരികെ മടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ ഇടത്തുപുറത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രഭൂമിയിൽ വിശ്രമത്തിനായി കുറച്ച് നേരം നിൽക്കുന്നത്. ആ സമയത്താണ്, "ഇനി ഗുരുവായൂരിലേക്ക് വരേണ്ടതില്ല... ഞാൻ അങ്ങയുടെ ഇടത്തുപുറത്തുണ്ട്" എന്ന ശബ്ദം (അശരീരി) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കേൾക്കുന്നത്.

ശബ്ദം കേട്ടതോടെ പൂന്താനം നമ്പൂതിരി തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കിയപ്പോൾ, ഓടക്കുഴൽ വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന കൃഷ്ണഭഗവാനെക്കണ്ടു.ഈ ദിവ്യദർശനത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയ്ക്കായി, പിന്നീട് അദ്ദേഹം ആ സ്ഥലത്ത് തന്നെ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു — അതാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ ഇടത്തുപുറം പൂന്താനം ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രം. ഇതോടൊപ്പം, തന്റെ കുടുംബക്ഷേത്രമായ കീഴാറ്റൂരിലെ പൂന്താനം വിഷ്ണുക്ഷേത്രത്തിലും അദ്ദേഹം കൃഷ്ണപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇരുക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലും ആത്മഭക്തിയോടെ ദർശനം നടത്തി, അവിടങ്ങളിൽ ആയി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ച്, പൂന്താനം നമ്പൂതിരി തന്റെ 93-ആമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ ശാരീരികമായി വൈകുണ്ഠലോകത്തിലെത്തിയതായാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
