Thrikkavu Sri Durga Bhagavathy Temple Ponnani Malapuram

The presiding deity of this centuries-old temple is Goddess Durga. Although exact historical records of its origin are unavailable, it is widely believed to be one of the 108 Durga temples consecrated by Lord Parasurama in Kerala. The name "Thrikkavu" is thought to have evolved from "Thrikkani Kaadu." During the invasion of Tipu Sultan, the temple, along with several other sacred shrines in the Vettathunadu region such as Keraladheeswaram, Thrikkandiyoor, and Thriprangatu, suffered significant destruction.

The renowned Thirunavaya Temple—an ancient center of Vedic learning known across India and venerated by Vishnu devotees from Tamil Nadu—was also plundered and ruined by Tipu’s forces, as documented in the Malabar Gazetteer. Following the desecration of the temple idol, Tipu’s army repurposed the Thrikkavu Temple as an ammunition storage site, according to the Malabar Manual. It was later renovated and restored by the Zamorin. Devi at Thrikkavu Temple is worshipped in her Chathurbhaahu (four-armed) form, holding a Chakra (disc), Sankha (conch), displaying the Varada mudra (boon-giving gesture), and resting one hand on her hip (Katibadha). She is venerated as Sarvabeeshtapradhayini—the fulfiller of all desires—and countless devotees have shared stories of her boundless compassion and grace.

Bhagavathy is revered in three divine aspects: Parvati, Lakshmi, and Saraswati. In addition to the main sanctum, the temple complex also houses a shrine for Lord Krishna and sub-shrines (Upa-Devatha temples) for Mahaganapathi, Sastha, Sidhi Vinayaka, Hanuman, and Brahma Rakshas. Near the temple pond (Kshetrakulam) is the Moola Ganapathy Temple, accompanied by the pratishtas of Naga Raja, Naga Yakshi, and other serpent deities. The main annual celebration is the Navaratri Mahotsavam, which draws large crowds of devotees. The Vidyarambham ceremony—marking the formal beginning of a child's education—is held on Vijayadasami during this festival, attracting thousands of children and families. Another major festival is the Vrishchicka Mandala Mahotsavam, observed throughout the Mandalam season.

തൃക്കാവ് ശ്രീ ദുർഗ്ഗാഭഗവതിക്ഷേത്രം

മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയിലെ പൊന്നാനിയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന തൃക്കാവ് ശ്രീ ദുർഗ്ഗാ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം ഒരു പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട പുരാതന ഹൈന്ദവ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ശാക്തയരാധനയുടെ ആധാരമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ജഗദീശ്വരിയായ ദുർഗ്ഗാ ഭഗവതിയെയാണ് പ്രധാന ദേവിയായും, സാക്ഷാൽ ആദിപരാശക്തിയെന്ന നിലയിലും ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. ഭഗവതിയെ മഹാകാളി, മഹാലക്ഷ്മി, മഹാസരസ്വതി, ഭുവനേശ്വരി തുടങ്ങിയ വിവിധ ഭാവങ്ങളിലായി ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവകാലത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ആധികാരിക രേഖകൾ ലഭ്യമല്ലെങ്കിലും, കേരളത്തിൽ ശ്രീപരശുരാമൻ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന 108 ദുർഗ്ഗാക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായി തൃക്കാവ് ക്ഷേത്രം പരിഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

"തൃക്കാവ്" എന്ന പേര് "തൃക്കണിക്കാട്" എന്ന പദത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഉത്ഭവിച്ചതെന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യം പറയുന്നു. കോഴിക്കോട് സാമൂതിരി രാജാവാണ് തൃക്കാവ് ദുർഗ്ഗാ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥത. ലോഗന്റെ മലബാർ മാനുവൽ പ്രകാരം, ക്രി.ശ. 1766 മുതൽ 1792 വരെയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ മൈസൂർ ഭരണാധികാരികളായ ഹൈദർ അലിയും ടിപ്പു സുൽത്താനുമാണ് ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് ആക്രമണം നടത്തിയത്. അതിനിടയിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം ഗുരുതരമായി നശിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ടിപ്പു സുൽത്താൻ അതിനെ ആയുധപ്പുരയാക്കി മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തു.

പിന്നീട് 1861-ൽ സാമൂതിരി രാജാവ് ക്ഷേത്രം വിപുലമായി പുനരുദ്ധാരണം ചെയ്തു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചതുര്ബാഹുവായ ദുർഗ്ഗാ ഭഗവതിയാണ് — ശംഖവും ചക്രവും ധരിച്ചും, വരദമുദ്രയും കടീബദ്ധഹസ്തഭാവവും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന രൂപത്തിൽ. ഭഗവതിയെ മഹാകാളിയായും, മഹാലക്ഷ്മിയായും, മഹാസരസ്വതിയായും സങ്കല്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ദേവിയുടെ ദർശനം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ആണ്. ഗണപതി, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണൻ, ഹനുമാൻ, അയ്യപ്പൻ, നാഗദേവതകൾ, ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ് എന്നിവരാണ് ഉപദേവതകളായി ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്.
