Located in Kottappadam on the Kozhikode–Palakkad NH 213, just 400 meters from Aryanpavu in the Mannarkkad taluk of Palakkad district, this grand temple was once majestically maintained by the royal family of the Zamorin of Kozhikode.
Centuries ago, the region was dense forestland. A sage undertook deep penance here, seeking eternal peace and tranquility. At the end of his penance, the Goddess appeared before him, granted his wish, and vanished. She then manifested herself as a self-originated (swayambhu) idol in stone, and nature itself began to worship her.
A Brahmin from a nearby place called Brahmalayam had a divine dream revealing the Goddess's presence in this spot.
Upon visiting, he discovered the stone idol and informed the Zamorin king of Kozhikode—this occurred around 500 years ago. The king then built the temple and consecrated the idol in the form of Mahishasuramardini (the slayer of Mahishasura), establishing it as a powerful place of worship.
About 200 years ago, the temple faced destruction during Tipu Sultan’s invasion. Today, a trust formed by local residents and devotees has taken charge of the temple's revival and administration.
അരിയൂർ ശ്രീപിഷാരിക്കൽ ഭഗവതിക്ഷേത്രം
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ മണ്ണാർക്കാട് താലൂക്കിൽ, കോഴിക്കോട്-പാലക്കാട് ദേശീയപാതയായ എൻ.എച്ച്. 213-ൽ ആര്യൻപാവിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 400 മീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള കോട്ടേപ്പാടം റോഡിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന മഹാക്ഷേത്രം — കോഴിക്കോട് സാമൂതിരി രാജാവിന്റെ രാജകീയ പ്രൗഢിയോടുകൂടിയ ആരാധനാലയം.
നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് ഈ പ്രദേശം കാടുകൊണ്ടു കവിഞ്ഞ ഒരു വനനിബിഡ പ്രദേശമായിരുന്നു.
ശാശ്വതമായ ശാന്തിക്കും സമാധാനത്തിനുമായി ഒരു മഹാത്മാവ് ഇവിടെ കർശനതപസനുഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും, തപസ്സിന്റെ ഫലമായി ദേവി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഇഷ്ടവരം നൽകി ശിലാസ്വരൂപത്തിൽ സ്വയംഭൂരൂപിയായി ഇവിടെ അവതരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇതിനുശേഷം ഈ ദേവിമൂർത്തിയെ പ്രകൃത്യാ ആരാധന ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
സമീപത്തുള്ള ബ്രഹ്മാലയത്തിൽ വസിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണന് ദേവിയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം സ്വപ്നത്തിലൂടെ അറിവായി. അദ്ദേഹം ഉടൻതന്നെ സ്ഥലത്തെത്തി ശിലാരൂപം കണ്ടു. പിന്നീട് ഈ വിശേഷം കോഴിക്കോട് സാമൂതിരിയോട് അറിയിക്കുകയും, ഏകദേശം 500 വർഷം മുമ്പ് സാമൂതിരി രാജാവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കുകയും മഹിഷാസുരമർദ്ദിനിയായി ദേവിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
എങ്കിലും, ഏകദേശം 200 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് നടന്ന ടിപ്പു സുൽത്താന്റെ ആക്രമണത്തിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം നാശനഷ്ടങ്ങൾ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങുകയും ആഴ്ച്ചകൾക്കായി ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇന്ന്, പ്രദേശവാസികളും ഭക്തരും ചേർന്ന് ഒരു ട്രസ്റ്റ് രൂപപ്പെടുത്തി, ക്ഷേത്രം വീണ്ടും പ്രാഭാവത്തോടെ ക്ഷേത്ര കാര്യങ്ങൾ നോക്കി നടത്തുകയാണ്.
