Athazhanallur Mahashiva Temple in Kodunthirappully, Palakkad, is believed to be one among the 108 Shiva temples consecrated by the great sage Agasthya Maharishi.
This sacred temple, considered to have been installed during the Dvapara Yuga by the revered sage Agasthya, who was a supreme ascetic, is thousands of years old. It is located on the northern bank of the Bharathapuzha river in Athazhanellur and faces west.
As one of the 108 revered Shiva temples, the Athazhanallur Mahashiva Temple underwent renovation works based on the Ashtamangala Prashnam conducted in 2012.
Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) and the Nandi Mandapam have been entirely constructed using black stone (Krishna Shila), and the roof of the Sreekovil has been covered with copper. Additionally, the Nalambalam (temple inner courtyard) has been rebuilt.
Within the temple premises, new structures have also been constructed, including the Subrahmanya temple and the Nagathara (sacred serpent grove).
അത്താഴനല്ലൂർ മഹാശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ കൊടുന്തിരപ്പുളളിയിലെ അത്താഴനല്ലൂരിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ശ്രീ അത്താഴനല്ലൂർ മഹാശിവക്ഷേത്രം, നൂറ്റിയെട്ട് ശിവാലയങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായി വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. താപസശ്രേഷ്ഠനായ അഗസ്ത്യമഹർഷിയാണ് ദ്വാപരയുഗത്തിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയത് എന്നതാണ് വിശ്വാസം. സഹസ്രാബ്ദങ്ങളുടെ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ മഹാക്ഷേത്രം, ഭാരതപ്പുഴയുടെ വടക്കേ കരത്തുള്ള അത്താഴനല്ലൂരിൽ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് അഭിമുഖമായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു.
2012-ൽ നടന്ന അഷ്ടമംഗല്യപ്രശ്നവിധി പ്രകാരം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വിപുലമായ നവീകരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടപ്പാക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ശ്രീകോവിലും നന്ദിമണ്ഡപവും കൃഷ്ണശിലയിൽ നിർമ്മിക്കുകയും, ശ്രീകോവിൽ മേൽക്കൂര ചെമ്പ് കൊണ്ടു പൊതിയുകയും ചെയ്തു. നാലമ്പലം പുതുക്കിപ്പണിയുകയും ചെയ്തു. കൂടാതെ ക്ഷേത്രമതിലിനകത്ത് പുതിയതായി സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യക്ഷേത്രം, നാഗത്തറ തുടങ്ങിയ ഘടകങ്ങൾ കൂടി നിർമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
