Ayalur Mahadeva Temple is an ancient shrine located in Ayalur village near Nemmara, in Chittoor taluk of Palakkad district, Kerala.
It stands gracefully on the banks of the Ayalurpuzha, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha River. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the divine consort of Goddess Parvati, and also houses sub-deities including Lord Ganapathy, Lord Subrahmanya, Lord Ayyappa, and the serpent gods (Nagas).
According to legend, the idols at the temples of Trippalavoor and Ayalur were installed by an asura (demon) named Kharasura. It is said that he discovered three Shivalingas from the banks of the Gayatripuzha River. Carrying one in his right hand, one in his left hand, and the third between his teeth, he journeyed onward.
Shivalinga in his right hand was placed at Trippalavoor, the one in his left at Ayalur, and the one held in his teeth at another site in Trippalavoor. Because of this shared origin, the legends of the temples in Trippalavoor and Ayalur are closely linked, similar to the stories associated with the famed Shiva temples of Vaikom, Kaduthuruthy, and Ettumanoor in Kottayam district.
It is considered highly auspicious to visit all three temples on the same day.
Major annual festivals celebrated at Ayalur Mahadeva Temple include the eight-day festival starting on the new moon day of the Malayalam month of Thulam, Thiruvathira in the month of Dhanu, and Maha Shivaratri in the month of Kumbham. Once under the reign of the King of Cochin, the temple is currently administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board.
അയിലൂർ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ ചിറ്റൂർ താലൂക്കിൽ നെമ്മാറയ്ക്ക് സമീപമുള്ള അയിലൂർ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ, ഭാരതപ്പുഴയുടെ ഉപനദിയായ അയിലൂർപ്പുഴയുടെ തീരത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് അയിലൂർ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. പാർവ്വതിദേവിയോടൊപ്പം പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന പരമശിവൻ ആണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന ദൈവം. ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതി, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, നാഗദേവതകൾ എന്നിവർക്കും ഇവിടെ ആരാധന നടക്കുന്നു.ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ പ്രകാരം, ഖരാസുരൻ എന്ന അസുരനാണ് തൃപ്പാളൂർ, തൃപ്പല്ലാവൂർ, അയിലൂർ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലെ ശിവലിംഗങ്ങൾ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഖരൻ ഗായത്രിപുഴയുടെ തീരത്ത് നിന്ന് മൂന്നു ശിവലിംഗങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും, അവയിൽ ഒന്നെണ്ണം വലതുകൈയിൽ, മറ്റൊന്ന് ഇടതുകൈയിൽ, മൂന്നാമത്തേത് പല്ലിൽ കടിച്ചുപിടിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് യാത്ര തുടരുമായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം വലതുകൈയിൽ ഉണ്ടായ ശിവലിംഗം തൃപ്പാളൂരിലും, ഇടതുകൈയിൽ ഉണ്ടായത് അയിലൂരിലും, പല്ലിൽ പിടിച്ചതും തൃപ്പല്ലാവൂരിലും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു എന്നാണ് പുരാണകഥ. ഈ മൂന്നു ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലും ഒരേ ദിവസം ദർശനം നടത്തുന്നത് മഹാപുണ്യകരമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങൾ തുലാം മാസത്തിലെ അമാവാസ്യ ദിനത്തിൽ ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന എട്ടുദിവസത്തെ വാർഷിക ഉത്സവം, ധനുമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര, കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ മഹാശിവരാത്രി എന്നിവയാണ്. ഒരു കാലത്ത് കൊച്ചി രാജാവിന്റെ ഭരണാധീനത്തിലുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഇപ്പോൾ കൊച്ചി ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലാണ്. കോട്ടയത്തെ വൈക്കം, കടുത്തുരുത്തി, ഏറ്റുമാനൂർ എന്നീ അതിപുരാതന ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുമായി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുടെ ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് അത്തരം സാദൃശ്യമുണ്ട്.
