Ayiloor Temple, situated on the banks of the Ayiloor River in Nemmara, Kerala, is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, and the temple is believed to be over 1000 years old. According to legend, the Shiva Lingam installed here was one of the three Lingams obtained by the giant Kara after a long period of penance (Thapas). He carried the three Lingams—one in each hand and one held in his teeth.
Lingam in his right hand was installed at Ayiloor, the one in his left at Trippalore (using his foot), and the one held in his teeth at Pallavur. All three temples are located within a five-kilometer radius.
Originally, the temple was under the ownership of the Kodakara Nair family, with the warrior Kulangattu Nair managing its affairs. The temple was then known as "Akhileshwarapuram," a name that later evolved into "Akiloor," "Ayaloor," or "Ayiloor" due to the abundance of Akil (a fragrant wood) in the area. Over time, the temple passed through the hands of several Namboothiri families before coming under the administration of the Cochin royal family. Today, it is managed by the Cochin Devaswom Board.
The temple faces east and conducts three daily poojas along with Sheeveli (ritual procession). The Shiva Lingam is believed to be Parvathy Sametha, symbolizing the presence of Goddess Parvathy alongside Lord Shiva. A unique feature of this temple is the placement of Nandi (Shiva’s vehicle) on the southern side near the compound wall, facing east.
Sub-deities worshipped at the temple include Ganapathy, Subrahmanya, and Ayyappa. Along the circumambulatory path (Pradakshina path) to the right of Nandi are idols of the seven Matrikas—Brahmani, Maheshwari, Vaishnavi, Kaumari, Indrani, Varahi, and Chamundi.
Goddess Parvathy is worshipped as Simhavahini (one who rides a lion), and a lamp is lit in her honor on the western side behind Nandi. There is also a sculpture of Dakshinamurthy on the southern side of the temple, and a Nagapratishta (serpent deity) can be found in the southwest corner outside the sanctum sanctorum (Sreekovil).
അയിലൂർ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ ചിറ്റൂർ താലൂക്കിൽ നെമ്മാറയിലേക്ക് അടുത്തു, അയിലൂർ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ, ഭാരതപ്പുഴയുടെ ഉപപോഷകനദിയായ അയിലൂർപ്പുഴയുടെ കരയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതനമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് അയിലൂർ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം. പാർവ്വതീസമേതനായ പരമശിവൻ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതി, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, അയ്യപ്പൻ, നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ എന്നിവർക്കും പ്രതിഷ്ഠകൾ ഉണ്ട്.
ഐതിഹ്യമനുസരിച്ച്, തൃപ്പല്ലാവൂർ, തൃപ്പാളൂർ എന്നീ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലെയും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെയും ശിവലിംഗങ്ങൾ പ്രതിഷ്‌ട ചെയ്തത് ഖരൻ എന്ന അസുരനാണ്. ഖരൻ തന്റെ വലതുകൈയിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ശിവലിംഗം തൃപ്പാളൂരിൽ, ഇടത് കൈയിൽ ഉള്ള ശിവലിംഗം അയിലൂരിൽ, കൂടാതെ പല്ലുകൊണ്ട് കടിച്ചുപിടിച്ച ശിവലിംഗം തൃപ്പല്ലാവൂരിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചതായി പറയുന്നു.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആണ്ടുവിശേഷങ്ങൾ: തുലാമാസത്തിലെ അമാവാസി ദിവസം നടക്കുന്ന ആറാട്ടായി എട്ടുദിവസത്തെ ഉത്സവം, ധനുമാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര, കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രി എന്നിവയാണ്. ദീർഘകാലം കൊച്ചി രാജാവിന്റെ കീഴിലായിരുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, ഇപ്പോള്‍ കൊച്ചിൻ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന് കീഴിലാണ്.
