Azhakotta Mahadeva Temple is one of the prominent Shiva temples in the Palakkad district of Kerala.
It is situated approximately 12 kilometers south of Palakkad town and about 2 kilometers west of Kuzhalmannam, along the Palakkad–Thrissur route (National Highway 544). The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, worshipped in the fierce form of Ugramurti.
The temple also houses equally revered deities like Lord Vishnu and sub-deities including Lord Ganapati, Lord Shasta, Goddess Durga, Bhadrakali (in the Thirumandhamkunnilamma Sankalpa), Lord Hanuman, and the Naga gods.
The temple's main annual festival is the Arattutsavam, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Dhanu. Shivaratri, observed in the month of Kumbham, is also an important occasion at the temple. The temple is under the ownership of the Zamorin of Kozhikode.
അഴകൊത്ത മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് അഴകൊത്ത മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. പാലക്കാട് പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 12 കിലോമീറ്റർ തെക്കോട്ടും, പാലക്കാട്-തൃശ്ശൂർ ദേശീയപാത (NH-544) വഴിയായ കുഴൽമന്ദത്തുനിന്ന് രണ്ടുകിലോമീറ്റർ പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് ആണ് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഇവിടെ പ്രധാനദേവതയായി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത് ഉഗ്രമൂർത്തിയായ ശിവനാണ്. കൂടാതെ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനും സമാന പ്രാധാന്യത്തോടെ ഗണപതി, ശാസ്താവ്, ദുർഗ്ഗ, ഭദ്രകാളി (തിരുമാന്ധാംകുന്നിൽ അമ്മയുടെ സങ്കൽപ്പത്തിൽ), ഹനുമാൻ, നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയ്ക്കും പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളുണ്ട്.
ധനുമാസത്തിൽ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ആറാട്ടുത്സവം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമാണ്. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ മഹാശിവരാത്രിയും വലിയ ആഘോഷങ്ങളോടെ ആചരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കോഴിക്കോട് സാമൂതിരിയുടെ കീഴിലായാണ് വരുന്നത്. ഏകദേശം രണ്ടായിരം വർഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രമായാണ് അഴകൊത്ത മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രത്തെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്.
ഇന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പറമ്പ് ഒരിക്കലിൽ ഒരു മഹാശിവഭക്തനായ ബ്രാഹ്മണന്റെ വീടായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യം പറയുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം കിരാതമൂർത്തിയായ ശിവനെ ഭക്തിപൂർവം ഉപാസിച്ച് ദർശനം നേടിയതോടെ, ശിവൻ അവിടെ തന്നെ പ്രത്യക്ഷനായി താമസിച്ചെന്നും, പിന്നീട് അസ്ഥാനം ക്ഷേത്രമായി രൂപപ്പെട്ടുവെന്നുമാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.
