Chitturkavu Devi Temple is a prominent Hindu temple located within the boundaries of Chittur municipality, approximately 15 km from Palakkad city in Kerala.
Positioned on the eastern side of the Western Ghats, the region is historically known as ‘Kongan Nadu’. According to legend, during ancient times in Malabar's history, the Kongan army invaded Chittur through the mountain pass, leading to a fierce battle. With the divine intervention of the Chittur Goddess, the people of Chittur were able to defeat the Kongan forces.
To commemorate this victory, the annual ‘Konganpada’ festival is celebrated at the Chitturkavu Temple.
The main deity of the temple is Goddess Durga, worshipped here in her fierce and powerful form. One of the most significant offerings made to the Goddess is called ‘Chanthattom’. Due to the continuous and devoted performance of this ritual over the years, the idol of the Goddess has turned deep black in color.
The legend surrounding the divine birth of Goddess Kali is as follows: Daruka, a wicked demon, received a powerful boon from Lord Brahma, with which he conquered the three worlds.
The gods (Devas) suffered greatly under his tyranny. Enraged by the demon’s cruelty, Lord Shiva created Goddess Kali from the fire of his anger and assigned her the task of destroying Daruka.
Queen Daruki, the wife of Daruka and the queen of the forest, was a devoted follower of Goddess Parvati. When the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha urged Daruka to provoke the goddess, Daruki, with deep devotion, called upon Parvati—unaware that Parvati and Kali are one and the same. Infuriated by Daruka’s disrespectful behavior toward women, Kali disregarded Daruki’s pleas for mercy and killed the demon. Witnessing this, Shumbha and Nishumbha fled in fear.
This powerful tale underscores the protective and fierce nature of the goddess worshipped at Chitturkavu Devi Temple.
ചിറ്റൂർ കാവ്
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ ചിറ്റൂരിലാണ് ചിറ്റൂർ കാവ് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പഴയന്നൂർ കാവ് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത് . ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന ആചാരിക ആഘോഷമാണ് കൊങ്ങൻപട. ഈ വേല, ദേശത്തെ മുഴുവൻ ജനത ഒന്നിച്ചു ചേർന്ന് അന്യദേശശക്തികളെ നേരിട്ട യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയ്ക്ക് നടത്തുന്ന ഉത്സവമായാണ് വിലയിരുത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്. പുരാതനകാലത്ത് കോയമ്പത്തൂർ, സെലം എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു കോങ്ങനാട് എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ട പ്രദേശത്തിനകം.
ഈ പ്രദേശത്തുനിന്ന് ചരക്കുകൾ കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്യുന്നത് പാലക്കാട് ചുരം വഴിയായിരുന്നു. ചിറ്റൂർ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ സമൃദ്ധിയെയും ഫലഭൂയിഷ്ടതയെയും കണ്ട് കോങ്ങന്മാർ ഈ പ്രദേശം കൈയ്യേറാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. ആ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ നിന്നും ദേശത്തെ രക്ഷിച്ചത് ചിറ്റൂർ ഭഗവതിയാണെന്ന് വിശ്വാസം നിലനില്ക്കുന്നു.
ഇതിന്റെ സ്മരണയ്ക്കായാണ് ഇന്ന് വരെ കൊങ്ങൻപട എന്ന ആചാരപരമായ പോരാട്ട വേല ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അത്യന്തര ഭക്തിപരമായി ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.
