Mangottukavu Temple is situated in the village of Athipotta in the Palakkad district of Kerala, approximately 12 kilometers from Alathur.
The temple reflects the simplicity and cultural spirit of the rural communities of Palakkad.
The presiding deity of the temple is Mangottu Bhagavathi (a form of Goddess Bhadrakali). The temple also houses sub-deities like Lord Ganapathy and Lord Subramanian. Outside the main shrine, Mookkan Chathan, believed to be the attendant of the goddess, is also worshipped.
It is a common tradition for devotees to offer animal sacrifices, such as chickens and goats, to Chathan, seeking success in all kinds of endeavors, whether good or challenging.
The main annual festival celebrated at the temple is the Mangottukavu Vela, held on the second Sunday after Vishu (April). The festivities begin a week prior to Vela, with the flag hoisting ceremony taking place on the first Sunday after Vishu.
On the following Monday, the Kari-Kali dance festival is celebrated, during which members of the Nair community visit Hindu homes in the area, singing and dancing in devotion to the goddess. On Tuesday, the Chamans-Kali is held, which follows a similar tradition of devotional house visits.
Wednesday marks the celebration of the Kummatti festival, which includes vibrant cultural performances such as Chakyar Koothu and Pava Koothu. The main festival day draws a large number of devotees who gather for the darshan of Mangottu Bhagavathi.
It is believed that the goddess Mangottu Bhagavathi originated from the Periyar House in Kalampath.
മാങ്ങോട്ടുകാവ് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം
കേരളത്തിലെ പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ അത്തിപ്പൊറ്റ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രശസ്തമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് മങ്ങോട്ടുകാവ് ക്ഷേത്രം. ആലത്തൂരിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 12 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്തിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. പാലക്കാട്ട് ഗ്രാമീണരുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ വിശ്വാസങ്ങളും ആചാരങ്ങളും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ ഏറെ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളതാക്കുന്നു.മങ്ങോട്ടു ഭഗവതി (ഭദ്രകാളി)യാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ.
ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതിയും സുബ്രമണ്യസ്വാമിയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് പുറത്തായി, ഭഗവതിയുടെ പരിചാരകനായ മൂക്കാൻ ചാത്തൻ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.വാർഷിക ഉത്സവമായ "വേല" എല്ലാ വർഷവും വിഷു കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടാം ഞായറാഴ്ച (ഏപ്രിൽ മാസം) ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. ഉത്സവത്തിന് ഒരാഴ്ച മുൻപേ മുതൽ ആഘോഷങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങുന്നു. വിഷുവിനുശേഷം ആദ്യ ഞായറാഴ്ച ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കൊടിയേറ്റം നടക്കുന്നു.
അടുത്ത തിങ്കളാഴ്ച "കരി-കളി" എന്ന നൃത്തോത്സവം നടക്കുന്നു, ഇതിൽ നായർ സമുദായാംഗങ്ങൾ പ്രദേശത്തെ എല്ലാ ഹിന്ദു വീടുകളിലും പോയി ദേവിയെ സ്തുതിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള പാട്ടുകളും നൃത്തങ്ങളും നടത്തുന്നു. തുടർന്ന് ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച "ചമൻസ്-കളി" എന്ന ഉത്സവവും ഇത്തരത്തിൽ തന്നെ നടക്കുന്നു.
ബുധനാഴ്ച "കുമ്മാട്ടി" ഉത്സവമാണ് പ്രധാന ആകർഷണം. ഈ ദിവസം ചാക്യാർ കൂത്ത്, പാവക്കൂത്ത് തുടങ്ങിയ സമ്പ്രദായിക കലാരൂപങ്ങളും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അരങ്ങേറുന്നു. പ്രധാന ഉത്സവദിവസം, വലിയത്ര ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ദേവിയെ ദർശിക്കുവാൻ എത്തുന്നുണ്ട്.
മങ്ങോട്ടു ഭഗവതിയുടെ മൂലസ്ഥാനം എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നതു കാളമ്പത്ത്‌ പെരിയോർ വീട് ആണെന്ന് ചരിത്രം പറയുന്നു.
