Mele Mampulli Shiva Temple, one of the ancient Shiva temples of Valluvanad, is located at Challikkal in Kongad, Palakkad district.
The temple is a subordinate shrine (Keezhadom) under the famous Kongad Thirumandhamkunnu Temple.
The main sanctum (Sreekovil) houses Lord Shiva, facing east, along with the presence of Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganapathi, serpent deities (Nagas), and Lord Murugan are also worshipped here as Upadevatas (sub-deities). Daily poojas are conducted twice a day.
The chief priest (Melshanthi) is Shri Narayana Prasad, and the Thantri (head priest) is Shri Animangalam Parameswaran Namboothiripad. Shri Modappillapalli Manakkal Sasthri Sharma Namboothiripad serves as the Ooralan (temple trustee). The temple, which comes under the Malabar Devaswom Board, is managed by a people's committee.
Maha Shivaratri is the major festival celebrated at Mele Mampulli Shiva Temple.
Other important observances include Thiruvathira, Pradosham, and Vishukkani. Dhaara (continuous abhishekam) is the main offering to the deity. Uma-Maheshwara Pooja also holds great significance here, with many devotees believing they have received blessings and fulfilled wishes through this special ritual. Offerings like Ganapathi Muttarakkal (breaking coconuts for Ganapathi) and Nagapooja (serpent worship) are also prominent.The temple is open for darshan from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM and again from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM.
Mele Mampulli Shiva Temple is believed to be over a thousand years old.
The temple features a rare circular Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum), a style once common in rural Kerala but now rarely seen. Surrounding the temple are ancient structures such as the Namaskara Mandapam (prayer hall), a large Balikkallu (sacrificial stone), the statue of Nandikeswara (the vehicle of Shiva), and a sacred banyan tree shrine (Aalthara).
Adjacent to the main temple is a smaller sanctum, where Lord Shiva is also consecrated. This shrine was established in 1835 under the leadership of Kongad Valiya Nair. Initially, the shrine did not have an upper structure (roof). Later, during 1950–51, the renowned gold merchant of Kongad, Puthan Veettil Kunchu Moothan, built the present structure of the Sreekovil. Here too, lamps are lit twice daily.
മേലേമമ്പുള്ളി ശിവക്ഷേത്രം കോങ്ങാട്
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ കോങ്ങാട് ചല്ലിക്കൽ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് വള്ളുവനാട്ടിലെ പുരാതന ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായ മേലെ മമ്പുള്ളി ശിവക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. കോങ്ങാട് തിരുമാന്ധാംകുന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ കീഴേടമായാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്.
ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ കിഴക്കോട്ടു മുഖമായ് ശിവപ്രതിഷ്ഠയുണ്ട്. കൂടെ പാർവതിദേവിയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യവും ലഭ്യമാണ്.
ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതിയും നാഗങ്ങളുമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കൂടാതെ, മുരുകസാന്നിധ്യവും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കാണാം. പ്രതിദിനം രാവിലെയും വൈകിട്ടും രണ്ടു നേരം പൂജകൾ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ശ്രീ നാരായണ പ്രസാദ് മേൽശാന്തിയായും, തന്ത്രി ശ്രീ അണിമംഗലം പരമേശ്വരൻ നമ്പൂതിരിപ്പാടായും, ഊരാളൻ ശ്രീ മൊടപ്പിലാപ്പള്ളി മനയ്ക്കലേ ശാസ്തൃശർമ്മൻ നമ്പൂതിരിപ്പാടായും ക്ഷേത്രഭരണത്തിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. മലബാർ ദേവസ്വത്തിന്റെ കീഴിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രം ജനകീയ കമ്മിറ്റിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നത്.
മഹാശിവരാത്രിയാണ് മേലേ മമ്പുള്ളി ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം. തിരുവാതിര, പ്രദോഷം, വിഷുക്കണി എന്നിവയും പ്രധാനമായ ആഘോഷങ്ങളാണ്. ഭഗവാനെ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച് ധാരയിടൽ പ്രധാനമായ വഴിപാടാണ്. ഉമാമഹേശ്വര പൂജയ്ക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. നിരവധി ഭക്തർക്ക് ഉമാമഹേശ്വര പൂജയുടെ ഫലമായി അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഗണപതിക്ക് മുട്ടറക്കൽ, നാഗപൂജ എന്നിവയും ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകളാണ്.

മികച്ചൊരു ചരിത്രപരമായ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള മേലേ മമ്പുള്ളി ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ആയിരം കൊല്ലത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുണ്ടെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. വട്ടശ്രീകോവിലും, പഴമയുടെ ചാരുത വിളിച്ചോതുന്ന ചുറ്റമ്പലും, നമസ്കാരമണ്ഡപവും, മഹാദേവന്റെ വാഹനം നന്ദികേശ്വരനും, വലിയ ബലികല്ലും, ആൽത്തറയും ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരത്ത് കാണാം.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമീപത്തായി മറ്റൊരു ചെറിയ ശ്രീകോവിലുണ്ട്, അവിടെയും ശിവപ്രതിഷ്ഠയാണുള്ളത്.
1835-ൽ കോങ്ങാട് വലിയ നായരുടെ നേത്യത്വത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയാണത്. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് ഈ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയ്ക്ക് മേൽപ്പുര ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. പിന്നീട് 1950-51 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ കോങ്ങാട്ടെ പ്രശസ്തനായ സ്വർണ്ണ വ്യാപാരിയായിരുന്ന പുത്തൻ വീട്ടിൽ കുഞ്ചു മൂത്താൻ ഇപ്പോൾ കാണുന്ന രീതിയിൽ ശ്രീകോവിൽ പുനർനിർമ്മിച്ചു. ഇവിടെയും ദിവസവും രണ്ട് നേരം വിളക്ക് വയ്ക്കുന്ന പതിവുണ്ട്.
