Muthassiyarkavu is a prominent temple located in the Nedunganad region of Palakkad district.
Historically, Nedunganad was a local kingdom that was later merged with Valluvanad. The temple is presently situated in the village of Kodumunda, near Pattambi. Here, Goddess Durga is worshipped in the unique and affectionate form of "Muthassi" (Grandmother).
According to legend, during an intense conflict between two ancient Nair families, the Goddess appeared in the form of Muthassi to stop the war.
After she brought peace, both families consecrated shrines for the Goddess in her Muthassi form in their respective areas. This is how the northern and southern Muthassiyarkavu temples came into existence.
Nedunganad Muthassiyarkavu is considered one of the major Durga temples in Valluvanad. The temple is located in Kodumunda, about 6 kilometers from Pattambi, and encompasses the regions of Kodumunda, Pattambi, Perumudiyoor, Kozhikkottiri, and Vallur.
The same deity enshrined at Nedunganad Muthassiyarkavu is also worshipped at the Vadakke (Northern) Muthassiyarkavu. The Goddess at the Vadakke Muthassiyarkavu is revered as the sister of the Goddess at the Nedunganad Muthassiyarkavu. The Northern Muthassiyarkavu is located at Naduvattam, near Koppam in Pattambi.
ശ്രീ തിരുവരായ്ക്കൽ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം
പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ നെടുങ്ങനാട് പ്രദേശത്തെ പ്രധാന ദുർഗ്ഗക്ഷേത്രമാണ് മുത്തശ്ശിയാർക്കാവ്. പഴക്കമുള്ള നാട്ടുരാജ്യമായിരുന്ന നെടുങ്ങനാട് പിന്നീട് വള്ളുവനാടിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ചേർന്നു. നിലവിൽ പട്ടാമ്പിക്കടുത്ത് കൊടുമുണ്ട എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.
ഇവിടെ ദുർഗ്ഗാദേവിയെ "മുത്തശ്ശി" എന്ന രൂപത്തിൽ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. ഐതിഹ്യപ്രകാരം, പഴയകാലത്ത് രണ്ട് നായർ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ തമ്മിൽ ഉണ്ടായ പോരാട്ടം അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഭഗവതി മുത്തശ്ശി രൂപത്തിൽ ഇടപെടുകയായിരുന്നു.
യുദ്ധം അവസാനിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം ആ കുടുംബങ്ങൾ ഭഗവതിയെ അതത് പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ മുത്തശ്ശി രൂപത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു. അതിന്റെ ഫലമായാണ് തെക്കും വടക്കും മുത്തശ്ശിയാർകാവുകൾ രൂപം കൊണ്ടത്. നെടുങ്ങനാട് മുത്തശ്ശിയാർക്കാവ് വള്ളുവനാട്ടിലെ പ്രധാന ദുർഗ്ഗക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. പട്ടാമ്പിയിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 6 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ കൊടുമുണ്ട ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. കൊടുമുണ്ട, പട്ടാമ്പി, പെരുമുടിയൂർ, കൊഴിക്കോട്ടിരി, വള്ളൂർ എന്നീ അഞ്ചു ദേശങ്ങൾ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തട്ടകത്തിലാണ് ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നത്.
നെടുങ്ങനാട് മുത്തശ്ശിയാർക്കാവിലെ അതേ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയാണ് വടക്കെ മുത്തശ്ശിയാർക്കാവിലും കാണുന്നത്. വടക്കെ കാവിലെ ഭഗവതിയെ, നെടുങ്ങനാട് മുത്തശ്ശിയാർക്കാവിലെ ഭഗവതിയുടെ സഹോദരിയായാണ് അവിടെയുള്ള ഭക്തർ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്. പട്ടാമ്പി കൊപ്പത്തിനു സമീപമുള്ള നടുവട്ടം എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് വടക്കെ മുത്തശ്ശിയാർക്കാവ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
