Sri Nellikulangara Bhagavathi Temple Nenmara Palakkad

The main deity worshipped here is Goddess Jagadeeswari, also revered as Adi Parashakti and Sree Bhadrakali. Locally, the Goddess is affectionately known as "Nellikulangara Amma." The temple is most famous for hosting the spectacular Nenmara-Vallangi Vela festival, celebrated annually in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April), typically on the 20th of Meenam (Pisces). This grand celebration is jointly organized by the residents of the neighboring villages of Nenmara and Vallangi.

It is considered one of the most vibrant and culturally rich festivals in Kerala, second only to the Thrissur Pooram in grandeur. Traditional folk art forms like Kummatti, Karivela, and Andivela are performed during the festival. On the concluding day, known as Vela, nearly thirty caparisoned elephants participate in a majestic procession, adorned with Nettipattam (ornamental forehead decorations), making it a visual spectacle. The beautifully decorated elephant shelters (aanapandhal) prepared by both desams (villages) are a major highlight.

The festival commences with a ceremonial ritual known as Koorayidal, followed by twenty days of devotional recitals known as Dwaraka Nigraham Kalam Pattu. The legend behind this celebration recalls the victory of the Goddess over the demon Dwarakan, who was defeated in the forest, marking the triumph of good over evil. Key events of the festival include the Kanyar Kali, the grand Kummatti on the ninth day, Karivela on the tenth day, and Andivela on the nineteenth of Meenam. The main festival day (Vela) begins early in the morning at around 5 AM with the ritual Valukadayil.

This is followed by a series of events such as Valiyolavayana, Kolam Kayattal, Parayernnullathu, and the traditional Andippattu. After the symbolic Thidambu Aavahanam (invoking the deity’s spirit), a spectacular Panchavadyam (traditional Kerala percussion ensemble) is performed by hundreds of artists from Nenmara. A grand procession of eleven elephants proceeds to both the main temple and the Vettakkorumakan Kovil, and finally reaches the Nellikulangara Bhagavathy Temple.

Simultaneously, another similar procession arrives from Vallangi, and the two groups meet in front of the temple for the iconic Kudamattam (decorated parasol exchange), which is a major attraction. At around 4 PM, the first round of fireworks, considered one of the largest in the country, takes place. The celebrations continue through the night with Pandimelam, Thayambaka, and Panchavadyam.

The second and equally famed fireworks display is held between 3 AM and 6 AM the following morning. The elaborate decorations, rituals, and stunning fireworks attract thousands of devotees and tourists from across Kerala and even from other states, making the Nenmara-Vallangi Vela a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

നെല്ലിക്കുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം

പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ നെന്മാറയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രശസ്തമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് നെല്ലിക്കുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതീ ക്ഷേത്രം. ജഗദീശ്വരിയുമായും ആദിപരാശക്തിയായും പാരമ്പര്യപരമായി ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ശ്രീ ഭദ്രകാളിയാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ഇവരെ സ്നേഹപൂർവം “നെല്ലിക്കുളങ്ങര അമ്മ” എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു. ഏപ്രിൽ-മെയ് മാസങ്ങളിൽ, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് മീനം 20-നു, ആചരിക്കുന്ന നെന്മാറ-വല്ലങ്ങി വേല എന്ന മഹോത്സവം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ ഉത്സവമാണ്.

നെല്ലിക്കുളങ്ങര ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമായ ഈ വേല, നെന്മാറയും വല്ലങ്ങിയും ചേർന്ന് ഏകോപനത്തോടെ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സമ്പ്രദായപരമായ ഗ്രാമോത്സവമാണിത്. കേരളത്തിന്റെ നെല്ലറ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പാലക്കാട് ജില്ല ഗ്രാമപരമ്പര്യങ്ങളും സംസ്കാരവും കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഭൂമിയാണു്. ഈ ജില്ലയുടെ ഭാഗമായ നെല്ലിയാമ്പതി മലനിരകളുടെ താഴ്വാരപ്രദേശത്താണ് കുടകരനാട് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. നെന്മാറ, വല്ലങ്ങി, വിത്തനശ്ശേരി, തിരുവഴിയാട്, അയിലൂർ തുടങ്ങിയ ദേശങ്ങൾ ചേർന്ന് രൂപം കൊണ്ട പ്രദേശമാണ് ഇത്.

മലയാളമാസമായ മീനത്തിലെ ഒന്നാം തീയതി മുതൽ ഇരുപതാം തീയതി വരെ നെന്മാറ-വല്ലങ്ങി ദേശക്കാർ ഉത്സവത്തിരക്കിൽ മൂഴുവിളയാറാണ്. ദേശദൈവമായ നെല്ലികുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതിക്ക് അർപ്പിച്ച് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന വേലക്കാലം, തൃശൂരിലെ പൂരത്തെ പോലെ തന്നെ വേലകളുടെ പൂർവജ്വാലയും പൗരാണികതയും സംയുക്തമായോരു ആചാരപരമ്പരയാണ്.

നെന്മാറ വല്ലങ്ങി വേല എന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവം ദേശസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഐക്യത്തിന്റെ ചിഹ്നമായി മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു.ഈ വേല ഉത്സവം ഐതിഹ്യത്തെയും ആചാരപരമ്പരയെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഗൗരവത്തോടെ മാത്രമല്ല, അതിൽ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന ശക്തമായ സാംസ്‌കാരിക പ്രസക്തിയും പ്രശംസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ആരോഗ്യകരമായ മത്സരംപോലെ ദേശക്കാർ വിവിധ ചുമതലകൾ ഏറ്റെടുത്ത് ഉത്സവത്തിൽ പങ്കുചേരുന്നു.

വേലയുടെ പ്രധാന ഘട്ടങ്ങൾ മന്നം, മൂലസ്ഥാനം, വേട്ടക്കൊരുമകൻ ക്ഷേത്രം തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രധാന കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിൽ നടക്കുന്നു.വല്ലങ്ങി ദേശത്തിന്റെ വേല ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. തുടർന്ന് പഞ്ചവാദ്യത്തിന്റെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ മന്നതിലേക്ക് എത്തുകയും, അവിടെ നിന്ന് കുടമാറ്റം നടക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ശ്രീ കുറുംബ ഭഗവതിയെ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ച് നഗരപ്രദക്ഷിണം നടത്തി പാണ്ടിമേളത്തോടൊപ്പം പന്തലിൽ അണിനിരക്കും. ഇതിന് ശേഷം വീണ്ടും കുടമാറ്റം നടന്നു, ഭഗവതിയുടെ ദർശനത്തിനായി കാവുകയറി പ്രദക്ഷിണം നടത്തിയശേഷം ആൽത്തറയിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു.

അവിടെ അതിപ്രസിദ്ധമായ ആൽത്തറമേളം അഘോഷത്തോടെ അരങ്ങേറുന്നതാണ്.
കൂറയിടിലുളള ചടങ്ങിനോടെയാണ് നെന്മാറ വേലയ്ക്ക് തുടക്കം കുറിക്കുന്നത്. തുടർന്ന് വരുന്ന ഇരുപത് ദിവസവും ദാരികനിഗ്രഹം എന്ന കളംപാട്ട് diễnപരമായി പാടപ്പെടും. ഭദ്രകാളി ദാരികനെ വനത്തിൽ എതിർത്തതും നിഗ്രഹിച്ചതും, അതുശേഷം ആഘോഷിച്ചതുമായ ദൈവോൽക്കൃഷ്ട സംഭവങ്ങളാണ് ഈ പാട്ടുകൾയിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്. കണ്യാർകളിയും ഒൻപതാം നാളിലെ വലിയ കുമ്മാട്ടിയും വേലയുടെ പ്രധാന ഘടകങ്ങളാണ്.

പത്താം ദിവസമാണ് കരിവേല നടക്കുന്നത്, മീനം 19ന് ആണ്ടിവേലയും, അതിനുശേഷം മീനം 20ന് പുലർച്ചെ അഞ്ചുമണിക്ക് വാളുകടയൽ എന്ന ചടങ്ങോടെയാണ് നെന്മാറ വേലയുടെ മുഖ്യാഘോഷങ്ങൾക്ക് തുടക്കമാകുന്നത്. വലിയോല വായന, കോലം കയറ്റൽ, പറയ്യെഴുന്നള്ളത്ത്, ആണ്ടിപ്പാട്ട് എന്നിവ തുടർന്നുള്ള ചടങ്ങുകളായും ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. തിടമ്പ് ആവാഹനം കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ, നെന്മാറ മന്നത്തിലെ നൂറുകണക്കിന് വാദ്യകലാകാരന്മാരുടെ പഞ്ചവാദ്യം ഭക്തജനത്തെ ഉത്സവോന്മാദത്തിലേക്ക് കൈപ്പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് നയിക്കുന്നു. പതിനൊന്നു ഗജവീരന്മാരോടുകൂടിയ ഘോഷയാത്ര മൂലസ്ഥാനത്തും വേട്ടക്കൊരുമകൻ കോവിലിലും ദർശനം നടത്തി, തുടർന്ന് നെന്മാറയുടെ വഴികളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിച്ചു ശ്രീ നെല്ലികുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നു.

ഇതേ സമയം വല്ലങ്ങി ദേശത്ത് നിന്നും ഒരു പോലെ അഴകാർന്ന എഴുന്നള്ളിപ്പ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. കൂടിമുട്ടുന്ന ഈ ചരിത്രപ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഉത്സവകാഴ്ചയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലാണ് ചെമ്പട കൊട്ടി നെല്ലികുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതിക്ക് മുൻപിൽ കുടമാറ്റം നടക്കുന്നത്. ഏകദേശം നാലുമണിയോടെ ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന നെന്മാറ-വല്ലങ്ങി ദേശക്കാരുടെ ആദ്യ വെടിക്കെട്ട് രാജ്യത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ വെടിക്കെട്ടുകളിലൊന്നായി പ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. പാണ്ടിമേളം, തായമ്പക, പഞ്ചവാദ്യം എന്നിവ രാത്രിവരെ പാരമ്പര്യഗൗരവത്തോടെ നിറഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കും.

അതിനുശേഷം പുലർച്ചെ മൂന്നു മുതൽ ആറുവരെയുള്ള രണ്ടാമത്തെ വെടിക്കെട്ട് തികഞ്ഞ ഉത്സവോപസംഹാരമായി മാറുന്നു. വേലച്ചമയങ്ങളും, വെടിക്കെട്ടും, ആചാരങ്ങളും അനുഭവിക്കാനും ആഹ്ലാദിക്കാനും അന്യസംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുപോലും ഭക്തർ എത്തുന്നതാണ് നെന്മാറ വേലയുടെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രത്യേകത. ഏകദേശം 25 ലക്ഷം ആളുകൾ സാക്ഷിയാകുന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവദിനം മീനം 20 സംസ്‌കാരിക കേരളത്തിന്റെ മഹോത്സവമായ കൊടകരനാടിന്റെ നെന്മാറ വേലയെ അതുല്യമായി മഹത്വപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
