Sri Visalakshi Sametha Sri Viswanatha Swamy temple, popularly known as Kasi Viswanathaswamy Temple or locally as kundukovil is a famous Hindu temple located in the Kalpathy village of Palakkad in Kerala, India.
Sri Viswanathaswamy Temple, located in the serene village of Kalpathy in Palakkad, Kerala, is one of the most prominent Hindu temples in the region. It is famed for hosting the Kalpathi Ratholsavam, one of Kerala’s most celebrated temple chariot festivals. This ancient temple, believed to date back to the early 15th century, sits peacefully on the banks of the Kalpathy River (also known as Nila Nadhi).
Dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Vishalakshi (a form of Goddess Parvati), the temple has earned the title “Dakshina Kashi” (Kashi of the South) due to its close resemblance to the Kashi Viswanatha Temple in Varanasi, situated on the banks of the Ganges. This similarity is why it is also affectionately referred to as “Kasiyil Pakuthi Kalpathy”.
The temple is surrounded by four traditional Tamil Brahmin agraharams (villages): New Kalpathy, Old Kalpathy, Chathapuram, and Govindarajapuram, which form the cultural and religious backdrop of the temple community.
The idols of Sri Viswanathaswamy and Sri Visalakshi are securely installed using Ashtabandhanam, a sacred adhesive compound made from eight traditional ingredients to affix the idols to their pedestals. The Shiva idol, a Bana Lingam, rises four carpenter’s angul (inches) above the pedestal, with a circumference of approximately eight angul at the base.
The idol of Vishalakshi stands 24 inches tall from the pedestal to the top of her crown.
There are two types of temple worship systems in Hindu tradition: Aathmartham and Parartham. The key difference lies in the sankalpam (dedicatory intention). In Aathmartham, the rituals are performed in the name of the temple’s yajamana (owner or patron), whereas in Parartham, the rituals are done for the collective welfare of all devotees.
At the Sri Viswanathaswamy Temple, the Aathmartham style of worship is followed.
The temple rituals follow the Tamil Agama traditions, specifically the Kamikagama, one of the 28 Agamas governing temple worship and architecture. The original priest was Sri Subramania Kurukkal from Mayavaram, and the temple’s pooja traditions are modeled after the Mayuranathar Temple in that region.
Four daily poojas are performed at the Sri Viswanathaswamy Temple: Usha Pooja at 5:45 AM, Uchikala Pooja at 9:45 AM, Deeparadhana at 5:45 PM, and Ardhajama Pooja at 7:45 PM. Among these, the Ardhajama Pooja is considered the most significant, as it includes dhara (continuous water pouring) and a daily abhishekam with milk. A special ritual known as the Umamaheswara Pooja is of great spiritual importance; it is believed that when performed with devotion, this pooja pleases both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, thereby bestowing divine blessings upon the devotee.
കൽപ്പാത്തി വിശ്വനാഥ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം
കേരളത്തിലെ വളരെ പഴമയും മഹത്വവുമുള്ള ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് പാലക്കാട്ടെ കൽപ്പാത്തി ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ശ്രീ വിശ്വനാഥ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. പാലക്കാട് KSRTC ബസ്സ്റ്റാൻഡിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 3.7 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്തിലായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രകൃതിഭംഗിയാൽ സമൃദ്ധമായ കൽപ്പാത്തി നദിക്കരയിലാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ കൽപ്പാത്തി രഥോത്സവം നടത്തുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമായി ഇതിന് പ്രാധാന്യവുമുണ്ട്.
പ്രാദേശികമായി “കുണ്ടു കോവിൽ” എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ശ്രീ വിശ്വനാഥസ്വാമിയെയും (പരമശിവൻ) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹഭാര്യയായ ശ്രീ വിശാലാക്ഷിയെയും (പാർവതി) പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചുള്ള ദിവ്യസ്ഥലമാണ്. മലബാറിലെ ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമുള്ള ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ ഇത്, 18 പടികളിലൂടെ പ്രവേശിക്കേണ്ടതിനാൽ “കുണ്ടമ്പലം” എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
നവംബർ മാസത്തിലെ ആദ്യ രണ്ട് ആഴ്ചകളിലായി നടക്കുന്ന രഥോത്സവം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെയും ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെയും പ്രധാന ആഘോഷമാണ്. ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിൽ കൽപ്പാത്തിയിലെ നാല് അഗ്രഹാരങ്ങളിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള നാലു രഥങ്ങൾ ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ തെരുവുകളിൽ സംഗമിച്ച് ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ ഘോഷയാത്രയായും, ശബ്‌ദഘോഷമായും മുന്നേറുന്നു. പ്രധാന രഥത്തിൽ ശ്രീ ശിവനും, മറ്റു രണ്ടിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പുത്രന്മാരായ ഗണപതിയും സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻSwamyയും ഇരിക്കുന്നു.
മറ്റു ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലെ രഥങ്ങളും ചേർന്ന് വലിയൊരു ദേവരഥസംഗമം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നു. സംഗീതോത്സവവും കലാപരിപാടികളും ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണങ്ങളാണ്. ലോകപ്രശസ്ത കലാകാരന്മാർ പ്രതിഫലമില്ലാതെ സന്നിധിയെത്തി സംഗീതപ്രതിഭകളായി പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നത് ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെയും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെയും ആത്മീയമഹത്വം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.
രഥോത്സവം 10 ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്നുവും, അതിൽ ആദ്യ 4 ദിവസങ്ങൾ വേദപാരായണങ്ങൾക്കും കലാപരിപാടികൾക്കുമാണ് മാറ്റിവെക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. അവസാന 3 ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ അലങ്കൃതമായ രഥം ദേവതയുടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയോടെ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ വലിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്നു.
ഇത് കാണാൻ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് ഭക്തർ കേരളത്തിലെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും എത്തുന്നുണ്ട്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം 700 വർഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ളതാണെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ഭാരതപ്പുഴയുടെ ഒരു കൈവഴിയായ കൽപ്പാത്തിപ്പുഴയുടെ തീരത്താണ് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. വിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം 1425ൽ, വാരണാസിയിലെ കാശി വിശ്വനാഥക്ഷേത്രം സന്ദർശിച്ച ഒരു മായാവാരത്തെ തമിഴ് ബ്രാഹ്മണസ്ത്രീ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന ശിവജ്യോതിര്ലിംഗമാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രധാനപ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ശ്രീ വിശ്വനാഥസ്വാമിയോടൊപ്പം ശ്രീ വിശാലാക്ഷിയും, ഉപദേവതകളായി ഗണപതി, സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ, ഗംഗാധരൻ, ദക്ഷിണാമൂർത്തി, സൂര്യൻ, ചണ്ഡികേശ്വരൻ, കാലഭൈരവൻ എന്നിവർക്ക് പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുണ്ട്.
