Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple located in Kodumthara is a highly esteemed pilgrimage destination in Kerala, devoted to Lord Subramanya.
The sacred shrine dedicated to God Subramanya, the son of Lord Shiva, is located along the banks of the Achankovil River. He is also referred to as Murugan and is known by the name Velayudha Swamy, attributed to his war weapon, the Vel.
This temple is renowned for its traditional architecture, featuring a distinctly conical roof over the Srikovil (Garbhagraham or sanctum). Consequently, the Srikovil is circular in shape, contrasting with the rectangular design commonly found in many Hindu temples. One of the prominent Lord Subrahmanya temples in Kerala, the Sri Subrahmanya Swamy Temple at Kodumthara, is positioned on the banks of the Achankovil River.
Adi Sankara is also thought to have visited this temple during his period of Mounavrutha, a time of silence observed as part of his spiritual practice, where he is said to have met Shakthibhadra, a renowned yogic saint.
Among the various festivals celebrated here, the annual Pooyam or Thaipooyam, known as Thaipoosam in Tamil Nadu, draws a significant number of attendees. This festival takes place every January.
One of the prominent acts of devotion performed by the worshippers is the carrying of Kavadi.
This involves a small arched yoke with a cross pole, typically constructed from bamboo or other types of wood, on which devotees transport offerings to the temple. They often walk several miles while bearing the Kavadi. When groups of people carry the Kavadi together, they participate in a procession accompanied by traditional music.

കൊടുന്തറ ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം കേരളീയ വാസ്തുശൈലിയുടെ പ്രത്യേകതകളോടെ നിർമ്മിതമാണ്. വട്ടശ്രീകോവിലിൽ ഗർഭഗൃഹം ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മേൽക്കൂര മുൻപ് ചെമ്പു പൊതിഞ്ഞ നിലയിലായിരുന്നു, ഇത് വൃത്തസ്തൂപികാകൃതിയിലാണ്. മേടമാസത്തിലെ വിഷുവാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം. ആ ദിവസം, പത്തനംതിട്ട ധർമ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും താഴൂർ വലഞ്ചുഴി ഭഗവതിമാരോടൊപ്പം ദേവന്റെ കൂടിയെഴുന്നെള്ളത്തിൽ കൊടുന്തറ ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് നടക്കുന്നു.
