Koottungal Devi Temple is located 1.2 kilometers from Peringand in the Pathanamthitta district. These temples serve as symbols of a worship tradition that has persisted since ancient times.
The goddess revered in these temples is viewed as the universal mother, symbolizing the protective force that cares for humanity and all living beings. Koottungal Devi is considered the mother goddess of the Peringand area. Furthermore, she is conceptualized as a powerful entity that destroys malevolent forces threatening the local community and wildlife, safeguarding all creatures.
In the temple, she is worshipped in the form of Bhadrakali, who defeated the demon Darika, and she is portrayed in a tranquil manner.Significant festival days at the temple include the Karthika Mahotsavam in the month of Vrischika, the Prathishta ceremony in the month of Makara, the Revathi Mahotsavam on the day of the goddess's birthday in Makara, the Thiruvutsavam, and the ten-day Parayidil Mahotsavam in the month of Dhanu.
The procession associated with the Thiruvutsavam, along with the Pongala and Anpoli rituals, is conducted with great reverence in the presence of numerous devotees. The ceremonial offering known as Para symbolizes wealth and prosperity. It is typically performed during festive occasions. Devotees present this offering as a gesture of devotion to the deity. It is said that the offerings made in the temple are intended for the divine presence. Additionally, there is a tradition of bringing offerings to the temple from individual homes.
The deity is ceremoniously carried in a procession before being presented at the residences. The purpose of this offering is to alleviate misfortunes and to bestow wealth and abundance upon the household. While rice is the primary item used, other materials such as flowers, turmeric, fruits, and sugar are also included in the offerings.
