Kurampala Puthenkavil Bhagavathy Temple, located in Kurampala, Pandalam within the Pathanamthitta district, is renowned for its ceremonial Padayani festival.
Padayani festival occurs once every five years, with the most recent celebration taking place in 2021 and the next scheduled for 2026. This festival is observed during the Malayalam month of Kumbham. Similar to other temple festivities, the Padayani at Kurampala begins with the ritual known as ‘Choottu vaipu,’ which continues for a duration of ten days. On the eleventh day, the Kachikottu ritual is performed, while the Kappoli ritual is conducted throughout the preceding days at the temple.
On the eleventh day, the Thavadi dance is performed, accompanied by traditional instruments such as chenda, Kaimaini, Veeramadaalam, Veekku Chenda, and Thappu. Adavi, located at Kurampala, possesses distinct characteristics. A notable aspect is the Chooral Adavi, a ritualistic dance that evokes the ancient Narabali (human sacrifice) ceremony. This event takes place on the ninth day of the 13-day annual Padayani festival. In the morning, villagers participate in a procession carrying uprooted coconut palms, Areca palms, and thorny canes, a ritual known as ‘Thengu, Pana, chooral Kalippikkal.’ In the evening, devotees engage in penance as preparation for the ritual, rolling on the ground while entwined with thorny canes.
On the eleventh day, the Nayattum Padayum performance takes place, followed by the Pooppada the subsequent day. The Kaniyan Purappadu is conducted concurrently with Pooppada. Additionally, the Kalan kolam performance occurs on the same day.
A notable aspect of Kurampala is the creation of Ambalavum Vilakkum, a ritual involving the construction of a temple model from a banana stem. Upon its completion, the Kurampala Padayani festival concludes with the Bhairavi Kolam performance, which is specifically referred to as Thulli Ozhikkal.
കുരമ്പാല പുത്തൻകാവിൽ ഭഗവതീ ക്ഷേത്രം
പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയിൽ പന്തളത്തുനിന്ന് 3.9 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയായി കുരമ്പാലയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രശസ്തമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കുരമ്പാല പുത്തൻകാവിൽ ഭഗവതീ ക്ഷേത്രം. പുത്തൻകാവ് ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നടക്കുന്ന കൂരമ്പാല അടവി ഉത്സവം അനേകം ഭക്തരെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ആഘോഷമാണ്. ഈ ഉത്സവം അഞ്ചു വർഷത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ ചൂരൽ ചുറ്റി ഉരുളിച്ച നടക്കുന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ ഏക ക്ഷേത്രമായാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
അവസാനമായി 2021 ൽ നടന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവം, അടുത്തതായി 2026 ൽ നടക്കും. ദേവിയെ അനുനയിക്കാനും, വേലൻ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ കുലദൈവമായ അടവിയെ പ്രീതിപ്പെടുത്താനുമുള്ള 13 ദിവസത്തെ ഈ ഉത്സവം നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. വേലൻ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ കുലമൂർത്തിയായ അടവിയെ ദേവി തൻറെ രൂപത്തിലേക്ക് ആകർഷിച്ചുവെന്ന് നാട്ടുകാരുടെ വിശ്വാസമാണ്. ഇതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി, പൂർവ്വാധികം ശക്തിയുള്ള ദേവിയെ പ്രീതിപ്പെടുത്താൻ നാട്ടുകാർ ഉത്സവനാളിൽ നൽകുന്ന നൈവേദ്യമാണ് ചൂരൽ ഉരുളിച്ച.
ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെ മൂന്നാം ദിവസത്തിൽ വെള്ളയും കരിയും ചേർന്ന് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന കോല, നാലാം ദിവസത്തിൽ ഗണപതി കോലയും ഗണപതി പിശാചു കോലയും, അഞ്ചാം ദിവസത്തിൽ മറുതക്കോല, ആറാം ദിവസത്തിൽ വടിമാടൻ കോലയും തോപ്പിമാടൻ കോലയും, ഏഴാം ദിവസത്തിൽ പുള്ളിമാൻ കോല, എട്ടാം ദിവസത്തിൽ ചെറുമാടൻ കോല, ഒൻപതാം ദിവസത്തിൽ 51 പച്ചപ്പാളയിൽ തീർക്കുന്ന കാലയക്ഷിക്കോല, പത്താം ദിവസത്തിൽ കുതിര തുള്ളലും നടക്കും.
മാർച്ച് 11-ന് അടവി ഉത്സവം നടക്കും. രാവിലെ ഒൻപത് മണിക്ക്, തെങ്ങ്, പന, കമുക് എന്നിവയുടെ കളിപ്പിക്കലുകൾ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. വൈകുന്നേരം ഏഴിന് ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന പടയണി, രാത്രി 12 മണിക്ക് സമാപിക്കും. ആ ദിവസം ശീതങ്കൻ തുള്ളൽ, വൈരാവി തുടങ്ങിയവയും ഉണ്ടാകും. പടയണി അവസാനിച്ച ശേഷം പാനയടിയാണ്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വെളിച്ചപ്പാട് മരക്കുറ്റിയിൽ 101 ഇളനീർ ഉടയ്ക്കും. അടവിയിൽ ചൂരൽ ഉരുളാൻ വ്രതം എടുത്തവർ വെളിച്ചപ്പാടിൽ നിന്നും ഭസ്മം വാങ്ങി ക്ഷേത്ര നടയിൽ എത്തി ചൂരൽ ദേഹത്ത് ചുറ്റി വടക്കോട്ട് ഉരുളും.
പ്രത്യേകതകൾ: കാച്ചിക്കൊട്ടി, കാപ്പ് ഒലിയും താവടിയും പന്നത്താവടിയും തുള്ളുന്ന ഉത്സവത്തിന് നിരവധി സവിശേഷതകൾ ഉണ്ട്. അടവി ഉത്സവത്തിൽ കുരമ്പാല പടേനി കളരിയാണ് മുഖ്യമായ നേതൃത്വം നൽകുന്നത്. വിനോദത്തിന് പ്രാധാന്യം നൽകുന്ന കുരമ്പാല പടയണിയിൽ, കാഴ്ചക്കാരെ ചിരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഹാസ്യ രൂപങ്ങളായ വെളിച്ചപ്പാട്, പരദേശി, പുലവൃത്തം, അമ്മൂമ്മയും വാല്യക്കാരനും ശർക്കരക്കൂടം, മാസപ്പടി, അന്തോണി തുടങ്ങിയ കലാരൂപങ്ങൾ വളരെ തന്മയത്തോടെയാണ് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.
