Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, serves as a significant halting point, known as idathavalam, for pilgrims traveling to Sabarimala. The administration of this temple falls under the jurisdiction of the Travancore Devaswom Board.
Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple is positioned merely 1 kilometer from the primary highway that leads to the Sabarimala temple. It is enveloped by dense forests and rubber plantations. This sacred site is situated at an elevation of approximately 386.3 meters above sea level. The principal deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, whose idol is said to embody two distinct aspects: Ugramoorthy (the fierce form) and Mangala pradayakan (the auspicious form).
It is widely believed that Lord Shiva bestows his blessings upon his son, Lord Ayyappa, empowering him to combat all malevolent forces while directing his wrath towards evil entities. As is customary in numerous Shiva temples, a herd of oxen is safeguarded within the temple grounds. There are two Upa Prathishtas (sub deities) present at this location: Lord Kannimoola Ganapathi and Nandi. Daily rituals consist of three Poojas, which are conducted in the morning, noon, and evening. The morning ritual is known as Usha pooja, followed by Ucha pooja at noon, and the day concludes with Deeparadhana. Special observances occur on Sundays, Mondays, and Fridays.
Among the temple's significant events is the annual celebration of 'Maha Shivaratri,' which is highly regarded. In addition to Shivaratri, the temple also hosts its Thiruvutsavam each year with great grandeur. During the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, devotees from various states come to the temple for blessings and well-being.

നിലക്കൽ ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം ശബരിമല ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്കുള്ള പ്രധാന പാതയിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം ഒരു കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രവേശന കവാടത്തിൽ ശ്രീ പരമേശ്വരന്റെ വലിയ ശില്പം ഉള്ള ഗോപുരം കാണാം. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിന്റെ കീഴിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം നിരവധി ഭക്തരെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നു. കൊടും കാടുകളും റബ്ബർ തോട്ടങ്ങളും ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയുടെ കിഴക്ക് ഭാഗത്താണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. മഹാദേവനാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ.
പരമശിവൻ ആണ് പ്രധാന ദേവൻ. ഉഗ്രമൂർത്തി (ഉഗ്രൻ) എന്നതും മംഗളപ്രദായകൻ (മംഗളപ്രദമായത്) എന്നതും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന രണ്ട് രൂപങ്ങളിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുണ്ടെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. എല്ലാ കോപവും ദുഷ്ടതകളിലേക്ക് തള്ളിക്കളയുകയും, എല്ലാ ദുരാത്മാക്കൾക്കെതിരെയും പോരാടാൻ ശിവൻ തന്റെ പുത്രനായ അയ്യപ്പനോട് അനുഗ്രഹം നൽകുന്നു എന്നതാണ് പൊതുവായ വിശ്വാസം. നിരവധി ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ പോലെ, ഇവിടെ കാളകൾ ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരത്ത് സംരക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

ദിവസേന മൂന്ന് പൂജകൾ ഇവിടെ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. രാവിലെ ഉഷപൂജയും ഉച്ചപൂജയും, വൈകുന്നേരം ദീപാരാധനയോടെ സമാപിക്കുന്നു. പ്രത്യേക പ്രതിവാര ദിവസങ്ങൾ ഞായർ, തിങ്കൾ, വെള്ളി എന്നിവയാണ്. വർഷം തോറും ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന 'മഹാ ശിവരാത്രി' ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്. ശിവരാത്രിയുടെ കൂടാതെ, ഓരോ വർഷവും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തിരുവുത്സവം അതീവ ഭംഗിയായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
