Othera Puthukulangara Devi Temple is a historic Hindu temple located in the village of Othera, within the Thiruvalla Taluk of the Pathanamthitta district.
Othera Puthukulangara Devi Temple is dedicated to the goddess Durga Devi and is managed by a Trust, overseen by an elected committee. The closest town to the temple is Chengannur.
This temple is one of the thirty Durga temples located in Central Kerala, where the ancient Dravidian ritualistic art form known as Padayani is celebrated annually. The Padayani ritual is also observed in temples found in regions such as Pathanamthitta, Kozhencherry, Aranmula, Ranni, Thiruvalla, and Chengannur.
A key component of the Padayani festival is Kolam Thullal, which involves the portrayal of both divine and malevolent figures through traditional designs painted on areca palm sheaths using natural dyes. This performance is executed at the temples, where traditional artists craft masks, and trained dancers don these masks on their heads, all in an effort to honor the goddess Bhadrakali Devi.
Numerous varieties of Kolam are showcased here, including 'Yakshi, Pakshi, Madan, Marutha, Kalan Kolam (Kalari), Bhairavi,' among others. 'Valia Kolam,' a large-scale Bhairavi Kolam representing a fierce aspect of Bhadrakali Devi, along with another substantial variant known as 'Chattathel Kolam,' are typically presented on the final day of the festival. The Chattathel Kolam is crafted using 1001 areca sheaths and cannot be carried on the head; instead, it is transported around the temple on hand carts and subsequently displayed within the temple grounds.
This temple is unique in the world for its presentation of a Kolam made from 1001 areca sheaths. The principal deity of the temple is Goddess Durga Devi. Other deities present include Mahadevan, Dharma Sastha, Ganapathy, Yakshiamma, Brahmmarakshas (serpent gods), and additional forms of Yakshiamma. The temple offerings consist of Archana, Pushpanjali, Ganapathy Homam, Mahanivedyam Chathussatham, Payasam, among various others.
During the annual Padayani festival, Kolam Thullal is also presented as an offering. Padayani, the primary festival, is celebrated over a span of ten days in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April), leading up to the Thiruvathira star day.

പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയിലെ തിരുവല്ല താലുക്കിലെ ഓതറ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഓതറ പുതുക്കുളങ്ങര ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം ഒരു പുരാതന ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. മദ്ധ്യ കേരളത്തിലെ ഭദ്രകാളി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതും, പരമ്പരാഗത കേരള ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുടെ ആചാരങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ പാലിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. നാടുവാഴി കുടുംബങ്ങളുടെ ധർമ്മദൈവമായ ദേവി, പടയണി അവതരണത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ രംഗാവിഷ്കാരം പുതുക്കുളങ്ങരയിലാണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
1001 പാളയിൽ തിർക്കുന്ന മഹാത്ഭുതം അന്യാദൃശ്യമായ ഒരു കാഴ്ചയായി മാറുന്നു. പാലക്കാട് ആലത്തൂർ പുതുക്കുളങ്ങരദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രദേശത്ത്, പറപ്പാറ്റയുടെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും മറ്റ് ദുരിതങ്ങളും കാരണം, ആ ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ ചില ആളുകൾ ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണ ശ്രേഷ്ഠന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ പെരിയാർ കടന്നു തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലേക്ക് മാറി. ഇവർ ഓതറയിൽ താമസിച്ച്, അവരുടെ പരദേവതയായ പുതുക്കുളങ്ങര അമ്മയെ പഴയകവിൽ ക്ഷേത്രം പണിതു പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു. ഉഗ്രരൂപിണിയായ ഒരു യക്ഷി ജനജീവിതത്തെ ദുസ്സഹമാക്കി.
ഈ യക്ഷിയെ ബന്ധിക്കുകയും, പഴയകവിൽ നിന്നും ക്ഷേത്രം പമ്പാനദിക്കരയിലെ നിലവിലെ സ്ഥലത്തേക്ക് മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഗോത്രസംസ്കാരവും പമ്പാനദിയും അപൂർവ പച്ചമരുന്നും (വാതരോഗത്തിന് പ്രസിദ്ധമായ തകഴി “വല്യെണ്ണയ്ക്ക്” വേണ്ട പച്ചമരുന്നുകൾ) ഓതറയെ സമ്പുഷ്ടമാക്കി. ആറന്മുളയും പമ്പാനദിയും, ഗോത്രസംസ്കാരവും ചേർന്ന് വൈഷ്ണവ-ശാക്തേയ ഭക്തിയിൽ അധിഷ്ഠിതമായ ഒരു സംസ്കാരം വളർന്നു.
വിഗ്രഹപ്രതിഷ്ഠ ദ്വന്ദഭാവത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന മുല്ലപ്പന്തൽ ശ്രീകോവിലിലും, തൃപ്പാദശിലയും, ശ്രീകോവിലിനുള്ളിൽ സാളഗ്രാമ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയും ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകളാണ്. നാലബലത്തിനുള്ളിൽ ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ്സ്, യക്ഷിയമ്മ, മഹാഗണപതി, ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ്, മഹാദേവൻ എന്നിവരെ ഉപദേവന്മാരായി കാണാം, പുറത്ത് യക്ഷിയബലവും ഉണ്ട്. കായ്ക്കാത്ത ഇലഞ്ഞിയും ഇലഞ്ഞിത്തറയിലെ വട്ടെഴുത്തും ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകളാണ്.
മരങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു കാവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. വിനായക ചതുർത്ഥിക്ക് മഹാഗണപതിഹോമവും ആനയുട്ടും നവരാത്രി കാലത്ത് പത്തുദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന പ്രത്യേക പൂജകളും മണ്ഡലം ചിറപ്പ് ആഘോഷവും ലക്ഷാർച്ചന പുനപ്രതിഷ്ഠ ദിനാഘോഷം ധനുമാസ സംക്രമം മുതൽ തുടർച്ചയായി അഞ്ചു സംക്രമം എഴുന്നള്ളത്തും കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും വിഷു ദർശനം പടയണി സപ്താഹം വേലൻപാട്ട് എന്നിവിടത്തെ അനുഷ്ടനങ്ങളാണ്.
മീന മാസത്തിലെ തിരുവാതിര നാളിൽ തിരുവുത്സവം കാളകെട്ട്, ഘോഷയാത്ര, കരക ഘോഷയാത്ര, പഞ്ചവാദ്യം, കൊടികളുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെയുള്ള കാഴ്ച, ശ്രീബലി എഴുന്നള്ളത്തും സേവ, കേളി, വേലകളി, വണിയക്കോലം തുടങ്ങിയ വിവിധ പരിപാടികളോടെ ആകർഷകമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. പടയണി അവതരണത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ രംഗാവിഷ്ക്കാരം പുതുക്കുളങ്ങരയിലാണെന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ദേവി പ്രീതിക്കായി അഭിഷേകം, ചെലവും വിളക്കും, ദിവസപൂജ, ചുറ്റുവിളക്ക് പുഷ്പാഞ്ജലി, ഭഗവതിസേവ, പായസം വഴിപാടുകൾ നടത്തുന്നു. ഇഷ്ടലാഭത്തിനായി മഹാനിവേദ്യം (ചതുർശ്ശതം) വഴിപാട് പ്രധാനമാണ്. ശാന്തി ദുർഗ്ഗയായ, ഭഗവതിയെ കോടിയ്ക്കലമ്മയായി പന്തത്തിലവഹിച്ചു ഗുരുതി സമാനമായി ദേവിപ്രീതിക്കും മലദൈവപ്രീതിക്കും വേണ്ടി കോടിയ്ക്കൽ പൂജ എന്നൊരു വഴിപാട് ഉണ്ട്.
