Poothamkara Sree Dharma Shastha Temple is a historic Hindu Ayyappa temple located in Poothamkara, Enadimangalam, within the Pathanamthitta district, approximately 10 kilometers from Adoor.
Poothankara Sri Dharmasastav is revered as the deity of the seven mountains. Following the Erumelil Petta, the temple is renowned for hosting the most celebrated Pettathullal. This event occurs annually on the third Saturday of the month of Dhanu. The Desamparadakshina procession commences from the temple, proceeding down from Ezhunnellathu, while the Pettattullal begins at Poothankara Vavarpalli Nata and culminates at the temple.
It is noteworthy that individuals of all ages, genders, and social backgrounds, irrespective of caste and religion, actively engage in this ceremony, embodying the spirit of sharvadharma samabhavana. Poothankara boasted a sophisticated population even in prehistoric times. However, over the years, invasions from foreign nations and natural calamities led to the area becoming an uninhabited dense forest. A woman, while foraging for wild yams in this forest, struck a stone to sharpen her tool, causing blood to flow from it.
Alarmed, she and others sought refuge in Ilamannur, a neighboring region, where they reported the incident to the chief of the Chennayathu family. Recognizing the presence of a divine entity, he took the initiative to clear the forest and construct a temple in accordance with traditional practices, overseeing the rituals and worship. The Ilamannur Chennayathu family from Uranma generously donated the land to the temple.
Worship, meditation, and puja are founded on the principle of Kananasastha, depicted as embodying dharma, adorned with a garland of flowers, and wielding a bow and arrow while displaying an abhaya mudra. This principle suggests that those who seek refuge are granted protection, while individuals involved in unethical actions are distanced from such blessings and guided towards righteousness. The shrine is constructed without a roof over the idol.

പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയിലെ മാങ്ങാട് നിന്ന് 4.3 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള പ്രകൃതിദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ സമൃദ്ധമായ പൂതങ്കര ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് പൂതങ്കര ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം. സ്വയംഭൂവായ ശാസ്താ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയോടുകൂടിയ കേരളത്തിലെ അപൂർവ്വ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഇത്, പഴമയും വിശ്വാസവും കൊണ്ട് ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ ഹൃദയങ്ങളിൽ സ്ഥിരമായ സ്ഥാനം നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പൂതങ്കരയിൽ ചരിത്രകാലങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞാൽ, സംസ്കാര സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു ജനപഥം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് കാണാം.
കാലക്രമത്തിൽ, മറുനാടുകളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ആക്രമണങ്ങൾക്കും പ്രകൃതിയുടെ ദുരന്തങ്ങൾക്കും വിധേയമായ ഈ പ്രദേശം ജനവാസമില്ലാത്ത കാട്ടുപ്രദേശമായി മാറി. ഈ വനത്തിൽ കാട്ടുകിഴങ്ങുകൾ ശേഖരിക്കാൻ എത്തിയവർ ഒരു കല്ലിൽ ചില പ്രത്യേകതകൾ കണ്ടു, തുടർന്ന് അടുത്ത പ്രദേശമായ ഇളമണ്ണൂരിലേക്ക് പോയി, ദേശപ്രമാണിയായ ചേന്നായത്തുവീട്ടിലെ കാരണവരെ വിവരം അറിയിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ദേവസാന്നിധ്യം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ്, കനത്ത വനപ്രദേശത്തെ വെട്ടിത്തെളിച്ച് ശാസ്ത്രവിധി അനുസരിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കുകയും, പൂജാദികർമ്മങ്ങളും ആരാധനയും ക്രമീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് തൃപ്പടിദാനമായി വസ്തുവകകൾ സമർപ്പിച്ചത് ഇളമണ്ണൂർ ചേന്നായത്തു കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഊരാണ്മക്കാരായവരാണ്. വനമാല ധരിച്ച അമ്പും വില്ലും കൈയിൽ പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അഭയമുദ്രയോടെ ധർമ്മസ്വരൂപമായ കാനനശാസ്താവിനെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന സങ്കല്പത്തിലാണ് പൂജയും ആരാധനയും ധ്യാനവും നടത്തുന്നത്. ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നവർക്കു അഭയം നൽകുകയും, അധാർമ്മിക പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ ഏർപ്പെടുന്നവരെ അതിൽ നിന്നും തിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് ധാർമ്മികതയിലേക്ക് നയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനയാണ് ഈ സങ്കല്പം.
ശ്രീകോവിൽ വിഗ്രഹത്തിന് മുകളിലായി മേൽക്കൂര ഇല്ലാതെ നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മേൽക്കൂരയുടെ അഭാവം ആവശ്യമില്ലെന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു എന്നതാണ് ഐതീഹ്യം. പൂതങ്കര ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ് ഏഴുമലകളുടെ അധിപനായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. എരുമേലിൽ പേട്ട കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ പേട്ടതുള്ളൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലാണ്. ഓരോ വർഷവും ധനുമാസത്തിലെ മൂന്നാം ശനിയാഴ്ചയാണ് പേട്ടതുള്ളൽ നടത്തുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും എഴുന്നെള്ളത്ത് ഇറങ്ങി ദേശപ്രദക്ഷിണം നടത്തി, പൂതങ്കര വാവര്പള്ളി നടയിൽ നിന്നും പേട്ടതുള്ളൽ ആരംഭിച്ച്, പിന്നീട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്തുന്നു.
