Kottaram Mookambika Temple, located in Kolazhy village, about 6 kilometers north of Thrissur city, is a revered Hindu temple situated along the Thrissur-Ottapalam Highway.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mookambika, who is worshipped in her unified form as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. Alongside the main deity, the temple also houses sub-deities including Lord Ganapathi, Lord Ayyappa, and Brahmarakshas. Believed to be one of the oldest temples in the Thrissur region, the temple is estimated to be around 2,000 years old.
According to legend, a devout Namboothiri named Pandikashala Namboothiri, who had gone to worship at the Kollur Mookambika Temple, was followed back by the goddess herself. As per her divine wish, she was first enshrined in the central courtyard of the Namboothiri's ancestral home (illam). With the blessings of the goddess, the Namboothiri became a renowned scholar and eventually served as an advisor to the King of Cochin. Over time, the entire Kolazhy region came under the influence of the Pandikashala family. However, after the decline of the family, the temple and its properties came under the control of the royal palace (kottaram).
Since then, the temple has been known as the Kottaram Mookambika Temple.At the Kottaram Mookambika Temple, the all wish fulfilling Goddess Durga is worshipped in three distinct forms throughout the day Saraswati in the morning, Mahalakshmi at noon, and Bhadrakali in the evening. Devotees believe that morning darshan grants knowledge, noon darshan brings wealth and prosperity, and evening darshan ensures victory over enemies. The Navaratri festival during the Malayalam month of Kanni is especially significant, with Durga Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijayadashami being the most important days dedicated to the worship of the Goddess.
കൊട്ടാരം മൂകാംബിക ക്ഷേത്രം
തൃശ്ശൂർ നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 6 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്കുമാറായി കോലഴി ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് കൊട്ടാരം മൂകാംബിക ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. തൃശ്ശൂർ-ഒറ്റപ്പാലം ഹൈവേയ്ക്ക് സമീപമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം. മഹാകാളി, മഹാലക്ഷ്മി, മഹാസരസ്വതി എന്നീ ദേവതകളുടെ ഐക്യരൂപമായ കൊല്ലൂർ മൂകാംബികയാണ് ഇവിടെ മുഖ്യപ്രതിഷ്ഠയായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഗണപതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ്സ് തുടങ്ങിയവരാണ് ഉപദേവതകൾ.
തൃശ്ശൂരിനടുത്തുള്ള ഏറ്റവും പഴമയും മഹത്വവും നിറഞ്ഞ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി വിശ്വാസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ഏകദേശം 2000 വർഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുണ്ടെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. കൊല്ലൂർ മൂകാംബിക ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭക്ത്യോടെയുള്ള വാഴ്‌ച്ച നടത്താനായി പോയ പാണ്ടികശാല നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ കൂടെയായി ദേവി ഇവിടെ എത്തിച്ചെന്നത് ഐതിഹ്യമായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ദേവിയുടെ ഇച്ഛപ്രകാരം പണ്ഡിതന്റെ ഇല്ലത്തിന്റെ നടുമുറ്റത്തിലാണ് ആദ്യമായി ദേവിയെ സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്.
ദേവിയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹം കൊണ്ട് അതിഭിനായ പണ്ഡിതനായ നമ്പൂതിരി പിന്നീട് കൊച്ചി രാജാവിന്റെ ആസ്താനപണ്ഡിതനായി, കൂടാതെ കോലഴി ദേശം മുഴുവൻ പാണ്ടികശാല ഇല്ലത്തിന്റെ അധീനതയിലായി. നമ്പൂതിരിയുടെ മരണശേഷം ദുഃഖകരമായി ഇല്ലം അന്യമായതോടെ അതിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള സ്വത്തുക്കളും ക്ഷേത്രവും കൊച്ചി രാജാവിന്റെ കൊട്ടാരത്തിന്റെ മേൽനോട്ടത്തിലേക്ക് പോയി. അന്നുമുതൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം “കൊട്ടാരം മൂകാംബിക ക്ഷേത്രം” എന്ന പേരിലാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
സർവ്വാഭീഷ്ട പ്രദായിനിയായ ശ്രീ ദുർഗയെ ഓരോ ദിവസവും മൂന്നുനേരം വ്യത്യസ്ത ഭാവങ്ങളിൽ ആരാധിക്കുന്നത് ഇവിടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ആചാരമാണ്—പുലർച്ചെ സരസ്വതിയായി, ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് മഹാലക്ഷ്മിയായി, വൈകുന്നേരം ഭദ്രകാളിയായി. പുലർച്ചെ ദർശനം വിദ്യാ പ്രാപ്തിക്കായി, ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് ദർശനം ധന സമൃദ്ധിക്കായി, സന്ധ്യാദർശനം ശത്രു വിജയത്തിനായി എന്നാണ് ജനവിശ്വാസം.കന്നിമാസത്തിലെ നവരാത്രി ദിനങ്ങൾ ദേവിയ്ക്ക് അതീവ പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളവയാണ്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ദുർഗാഷ്ടമി, മഹാനവമി, വിജയദശമി എന്നീ ദിവസങ്ങൾ ഭക്തർ തീർത്ഥാടനം നടത്തുകയും പൂജകളും കൊണ്ട് ആഘോഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
