Punkunnam Seetha Ramaswamy Temple, also commonly known as the Pushpagiri Seetha Ramaswamy Temple, is located in the Pushpagiri Agraharam area of Punkunnam, in the city of Thrissur, Kerala
This temple is unique in its devotion to Lord Rama, as it is one of the rare temples where both Lord Rama and Goddess Seeta share the same pedestal in the sanctum sanctorum. A comparable example is the Bhadrachalam Rama Temple, where Seeta is depicted sitting on Rama’s lap. However, at the Pushpagiri temple, the idols of Rama and Seeta are distinct but placed side by side on the same pedestal. From the dhvajastambha (flag post), only Lord Rama is visible directly, as Seeta’s idol is positioned slightly inward to Rama’s left.
The temple also features separate sanctums (sannidhis) for Lakshmana—referred to here as Ilaya Perumal—and for Lord Hanuman. Notably, the temple is home to a towering 55-foot-tall Hanuman statue, including its pedestal. This grand statue was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India on April 25, 2023. Within the temple complex, there are also separate shrines dedicated to Lord Ayyappan and Lord Shiva. Interestingly, the Shiva temple and the temple pond located in front of it are believed to be much older than the Rama temple itself.
Pushpagiri Seetha Ramaswamy Temple was constructed by Diwan Bahadur T. R. Ramachandra Iyer, who served as a justice in the Cochin Court. He built the temple in devotion to his Ishta Devata (chosen deity), and the Kumbhabhishekam (consecration ceremony) was held on 13th June 1895. Even today, the descendants of his family continue to uphold the tradition of conducting the Seeta Kalyana Utsavam during the annual Rama Navami celebrations.
പൂങ്കുന്നം സീതാരാമസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം
കേരളത്തിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക തലസ്ഥാനമായ തൃശ്ശൂർ നഗരത്തിലെ പൂങ്കുന്നത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രശസ്തമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ശ്രീ സീതാരാമസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ ഏഴാമത്തെ അവതാരമായ ശ്രീരാമനും, ഭാര്യ സീതയും, അനുജൻ ലക്ഷ്മണനും, ഭക്തൻ ഹനുമാനുമായി ഒരുമിച്ചുള്ള ഭാവത്തിൽ ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകൾ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തന്ത്രി വിധാനപ്രകാരം ആചാരങ്ങൾ അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നതിനൊപ്പം തമിഴ്നാട് ക്ഷേത്രരീതികളെയും പാലിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് അതിന്റെ ആചാരപരമായ വ്യത്യസ്തതകൊണ്ടും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരത്ത് 'കാവുതീയാട് ക്ഷേത്രം' എന്ന പേരിൽ ഒരു ശിവക്ഷേത്രവുമുണ്ട്, അത് ശ്രീ സീതാരാമസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രത്തെക്കാൾ പ്രാചീനമാണ്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കേരളത്തിൽ സ്വർണ്ണരഥം ഉള്ള ഏക ക്ഷേത്രമായി വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. വിശേഷാൽ വസന്തോത്സവവും രാമനവമി ആഘോഷവും ഇവിടെ അതിപ്രശസ്തമാണ്.
ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് തമിഴ് ബ്രാഹ്മണരുടെ അഗ്രഹാരത്തിൽ ആണ്, അതിനാൽ ബ്രാഹ്മണപരമ്പരാഗത ആചാരങ്ങൾക്കും ഇവിടെ വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഹനുമാൻ പ്രതിമയായ 55 അടി ഉയരമുള്ള പ്രതിമ, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മുൻവശത്താണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. 2023-ലെ ഏപ്രിൽ 25-നാണ് ഈ പ്രതിമ ഔദ്യോഗികമായി ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടത്.
ഇന്ത്യയിലെ പ്രമുഖ വ്യവസായസംഘടനകളിലൊന്നായ കല്യാൺ ഗ്രൂപ്പിന്റെ കുടുംബക്ഷേത്രം കൂടിയാണിത്. കൊച്ചി രാജ്യത്തിലെ കോടതിയിൽ ജഡ്ജിയായിരുന്ന ദിവാൻ ബഹാദൂർ ടി.ആർ. രാമചന്ദ്ര അയ്യരാണ് ശ്രീ സീതാരാമസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തത്. തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ കുംഭകോണത്തിൽ നിന്ന് തൃശ്ശൂരിലേക്ക് കുടിയേറിപ്പാർത്ത ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെട്ടിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇഷ്ടദൈവം ശ്രീരാമനായിരുന്നു. ദിവസേന വടക്കുനാഥക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദർശനത്തിന് പോകാറുള്ള രാമചന്ദ്ര അയ്യർ അവിടെയുള്ള ശ്രീരാമ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയിൽ നിന്നും അനന്തപ്രേരണ ലഭിച്ചെന്നും, സ്വന്തം ഇഷ്ടദൈവത്തിനായി ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം പണിയണമെന്ന തീവ്ര ആഗ്രഹം രൂപപ്പെട്ടതാണെന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യമുണ്ട്.
ക്ഷേത്രം പണിയുന്നതിനായി അനുയോജ്യമായ സ്ഥലത്തിനായി അന്വേഷിച്ചുനടന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്, ഇന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രം നിലകൊള്ളുന്ന സ്ഥലം കണ്ടെത്താനായി. ഈ ഭൂമിയിൽ വെട്ടിത്തെളിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ഒരു പഴയ ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തുകയായിരുന്നു. അതോടെ, ശ്രീരാമക്ഷേത്രം അതിനോട് ചേർന്നുതന്നെ പണിയണമെന്ന തീരുമാനത്തിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം എത്തിയത്.ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പുനർനിർമ്മാണവും ശ്രീരാമക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ നവനിർമ്മാണവും ഒരുമിച്ച് ആരംഭിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം, അതിന്റെ പണി കൃത്യമായി പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കി. 1895-ലെ ജൂൺ 13-ന്, ശ്രീരാമന്റെ ജന്മനക്ഷത്രമായ പുണർതം നാളിലാണ് മഹാപ്രതിഷ്ഠ കർമ്മം ഭക്തിശ്രദ്ധയോടെ നടപ്പാക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.
