Alappancode Easwara Kala Bhoothathan Temple (അളപ്പന്‍കോട് ശ്രീ ഈശ്വരകാല ഭൂതത്താന്‍ ക്ഷേത്രം) is a historic and renowned pilgrimage site for the followers of Alappancode Ammavan, also known as Lord Ayyappa.
Alapankot IswaraKala Bhuthathan Temple is a site where faith, mythology, and narratives intertwine. Historically situated in Travancore, the temple's location changed with the formation of the state of Kerala. During this transition, four taluks from Travancore—Tovalam, Agastiswaram, Kalkulam, and Valavankot—along with a portion of Chenkotta taluk, were incorporated into Madras state. Meanwhile, the Malabar district and Kasaragod taluk from southern Karnataka were integrated into the remaining Travancore-Cochin state. Consequently, Kanyakumari district was ceded to Kerala, and the Malabar region, with the exception of Goodalur, was also absorbed into Kerala.
As a result, the Alappankot Sri Ishwara Kala Bhuthathan Temple is presently situated in Kanyakumari district.Alapankot temple is a unique place of worship where the deity is referred to as Ammavan. Despite the potentially misleading names of Alapankot and Mahadev, all the idols are revered in a similar manner. It is believed that Shastavu resides in the lap of Mahadeva at this site. The Yogadand or Bhutadand is venerated as Mahadeva. Numerous pilgrims visit to witness Shasta seated on his uncle's lap and to offer their prayers.
The temple is situated around a prominent peepal tree, which is regarded as the sanctum sanctorum. This sacred area is accessible from all four sides and is known as the 'Arayal Shrine' located at the base of the large peepal tree.
Numerous celebrations dedicated to Mahadeva and Shasta take place in this location. A shrine featuring 19 steps is also present, representing the conceptual Shasta situated on the lap of Yogadandai Mahadeva. In this area, Bhagwati is venerated on the horn of a stag.
While elephant processions are a customary aspect of festivals in Kerala, they are not observed in Tamil Nadu. The Alappankod Iswarakala Bhuthathan Temple stands as the sole temple in Tamil Nadu where elephants participate in processions. During temple festivals, at least 25 elephants are brought forth. This particular festival occurs annually on the last Saturday of December.
Additionally, a guardian figure for domestic animals is present here. It is believed that if livestock, dogs, or chickens fall ill, a visit to this site for prayer, chanting, and tying a string is sufficient for healing. Many individuals also come to offer prayers for their pets, and special offerings are made in this regard. Furthermore, it is believed that if a child's first meal is conducted at this location, Amman and Shastava will provide protection throughout the child's life.
ആലപ്പൻകോട് ശ്രീ ഈശ്വരകലാ ഭൂതത്താൻ ക്ഷേത്രം
വിശ്വാസം, ഇതിഹാസം, കഥകൾ എന്നിവയെല്ലാം ചേർന്ന് നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് അളപ്പൻകോട് ഈശ്വര കാല ഭൂതത്താൻ ക്ഷേത്രം. പണ്ടുകാലത്ത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തിരുവിതാംകൂറിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു. കേരള സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ രൂപീകരണ സമയത്ത്, തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ തോവാളം, അഗസ്‌തീശ്വരം, കൽക്കുളം, വിളവങ്കോട് എന്നീ നാലു താലൂക്കുകളും ചെങ്കോട്ടത്താലൂക്കിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗവും മദിരാശി സംസ്ഥാനത്തോടു ചേർത്തു. ശേഷിച്ച തിരുവിതാംകൂർ - കൊച്ചി സംസ്ഥാനത്തോടു മലബാർ ജില്ലയും തെക്കൻ കർണാടകത്തിലെ കാസർകോടു താലൂക്കും ചേർക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
ഇതിന്റെ ഫലമായി കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ല കേരളത്തിനു നഷ്ടമായി, ഗൂഡല്ലൂർ ഒഴികെയുള്ള മലബാർ പ്രദേശം കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് ചേർക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, ആലപ്പൻകോട് ശ്രീ ഈശ്വരകലാ ഭൂതത്താൻ ക്ഷേത്രം ഇപ്പോൾ കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ലയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു.ഈ പ്രദേശത്ത് തിരുവിതാംകൂറിൻറെ സാന്നിധ്യവും മലയാളികളുടെ സ്വാധീനവും വളരെ ശക്തമാണ്. തിരുവനന്തപുരം-കന്യാകുമാരി ദേശീയ പാതയിൽ മാർത്താണ്ഡത്തിൽ നിന്ന് തിരിഞ്ഞാൽ, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരാം. തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തുനിന്നും 45 കിലോമീറ്റർ, നാഗർകോവിലിൽ നിന്ന് 35 കിലോമീറ്റർ, കുഴിത്തുറയിൽ നിന്ന് 7 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരം ആണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക്.
ആചാരങ്ങളും വിശ്വാസങ്ങളും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ അളപ്പൻകോട് ഈശ്വരകാല ഭൂതത്താൻ ക്ഷേത്രം, വിശ്വാസികളെ ആത്മീയതയുടെ പുതിയ തലത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാന ശൈവ തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രമാണ്.ഭഗവാനെ അമ്മാവനായി കരുതിയുള്ള ഒരു അപൂർവ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് അളപ്പൻകോട് ക്ഷേത്രം. അളപ്പൻകോട് എന്ന പേരും മഹാദേവൻ എന്ന പേരും സംശയം ഉളവാക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, ഇവിടെ എല്ലാ മൂർത്തികളെയും ഒരേ സ്ഥലത്ത് ആരാധിക്കുന്നു.
മഹാദേവന്റെ മടിയിലിരിക്കുന്ന ശാസ്താവാണ് ഇവിടെ ഉള്ളത് എന്നതാണ് വിശ്വാസം. യോഗദണ്ഡം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഭൂതദണ്ഡം എന്ന നിലയിൽ മഹാദേവനെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. അമ്മാവന്റെ മടിയിലിരിക്കുന്ന ശാസ്താവിനെ കാണാൻ പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാൻ നിരവധി തീർത്ഥാടകർ ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നു.
ഒരു വലിയ വൃക്ഷത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി നിർമ്മിച്ച ശ്രീകോവിലാണ് ഇവിടെ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. വൃക്ഷത്തെ ശ്രീകോവിലായി കരുതിയിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, നാലു വശങ്ങളും തുറന്നിരിക്കുന്ന രൂപത്തിലാണ്. അരയാലിന്റെ ചുവട്ടിലുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ അരയാൽ ശ്രീകോവിലെന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.ഇവിടെ കലമാനിന്റെ കൊമ്പിൽ ഭഗവതിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. കേരളത്തിൽ ഉത്സവങ്ങൾക്ക് ആനയെ എഴുന്നള്ളുന്നത് സ്ഥിരമായ ചടങ്ങുകളിലൊന്നായിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ, തമിഴ്നാട്ടിൽ അവിടെത്തന്നെ വ്യത്യാസമുണ്ട്.
തമിഴ്നാട്ടിൽ ആനയെ എഴുന്നള്ളാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഏക ക്ഷേത്രം ആണ് ആളപ്പൻകോട് ഈശ്വരകാല ഭൂതത്താൻ ക്ഷേത്രം. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉത്സവകാലത്ത് കുറഞ്ഞത് 25 ആനകളെ ഇവിടെ എഴുന്നള്ളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും ഡിസംബർ മാസത്തിലെ അവസാന ശനിയാഴ്ചയാണ് ഈ ആഘോഷം നടക്കുന്നത്.വളർത്തുമൃഗങ്ങളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്ന അമ്മാവൻ കൂടിയാണ് ഈ സ്ഥലം. കന്നുകാലികൾ, നായകൾ, കോഴികൾ എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് അസുഖങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാകുമ്പോൾ, ഇവിടെയെത്തി പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ച് ചരടു ജപിച്ചാൽ മതിയെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. തങ്ങളുടെ വളർത്തുമൃഗങ്ങൾക്കായി പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കാൻ നിരവധി ആളുകൾ ഇവിടെ എത്തുന്നു. ഇതിന് വേണ്ടി പ്രത്യേക വഴിപാടുകളും ഇവിടെ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള ചോറൂൺ ഇവിടെ നാടത്തിയാൽ, പിന്നീട് ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവനും അമ്മയും ശാസ്താവും സംരക്ഷിക്കുമെന്ന് വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്.
