Aruvikkara Sastha Temple Maranalloor is a unique 16th-century temple complex in the bank of Neyyar River managed by the members of the locality. The circular Vishnu temple showcases exquisite stone carvings, while the Siva-Parvathi temple is a modest shrine.
The renowned and historic Sri Dharmashastha Temple (ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം അരുവിക്കര) is situated in Maranalloor , Aruvikkara, within the Thiruvananthapuram district. According to estimates by the archaeological department, this temple dates back approximately 2000 years. The principal deity is Sree Dharmashasta, accompanied by Poorna and Pushkala. Poorna signifies completeness, while Pushkala represents prosperity; thus, it is believed that those who receive the blessings of Dharmashastha with Poorna Pushkala will attain comprehensive knowledge and prosperity in their lives. Sree MahaVishnu is also venerated in the temple with equal reverence, with Sree Dharmashasta facing east and Sree Maha Vishnu facing west.
Sri Dharmashasta embodies a unique Shaiva Vaishnava form, distinct from the traditional conception of Ayyappa. The deity worshipped at Aruvikara Sree Dharmashasta Temple is regarded as Grihastha Shasta. Being two millennia old, the temple is meticulously preserved, and a stern notice from the District Collector warns that strict measures will be enforced against any acts of vandalism.
Intricate dragon faces are carved around the temple, serving as a testament to its ancient origins. These carvings depict animals that existed during that era. Historical researchers have established the temple's age based on stone inscriptions found on Shastam rock, located near the temple.
The Neeranjanam ritual, held every Saturday, is of significant importance. A remarkable phenomenon occurs as the Neyyar river flows directly in front of the temple, appearing to move in opposite directions upon reaching it. The temple is set in a picturesque location, and it is noteworthy that the temple was established following a dedication. No pooja or abhishekam is conducted within the Garbhagriha; instead, rituals are performed after invoking the deity and presenting a mirror image outside.
The temple hosts an annual five-day Painkuni festival. Additionally, the Mandala period is celebrated starting from the first day of Vruschikam, and the Makaravilakku maholsavam takes place during the month of Makaram. Many devotees visit the temple for pithru tharpanam during this time.
