Elamkulam Sri Mahadeva Temple is situated beside a vast and picturesque pond adorned with rocks. Initially, this location featured a large pond with rocks emerging from its surface. It was within this pond that the divine radiance of the Lord manifested in a self-originated form, leading to the gradual establishment of the temple. Originally, this site served solely as a sanctuary for the Nagas. A Brahmin from the Itayavanathu Madom would traverse a considerable distance daily to pay homage to Lord Mahadeva. One day, due to a wound on his leg, he was unable to reach the temple in time for the evening pooja, which left him deeply saddened for missing the sight of his cherished Lord. That night, he experienced a dream revealing that he could encounter Lord Mahadeva near the grove where he traditionally worshipped the Nagas.
The following morning, he discovered a self-originated Shiva linga on a rock in the center of the pond. He then began to perform poojas for Mahadeva, referring to Him as Mirthyunjaya. It is believed that the water from the grove of the Nagas possesses healing properties for various ailments. തിരുവനന്തപുരം നഗരത്തിലെ ഉള്ളൂരിൽ നിന്നും 2.6 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള ശ്രീകാര്യത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന ഇളംകുളം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം, ദേശീയപാതയോട് ചേർന്നാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ദേശീയപാതയുടെ വികസനത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി, നിലവിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രഗോപുരം മാറ്റേണ്ടതിന്റെ ആവശ്യകത ഉണ്ട്. 50 മീറ്റർ ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് മാറിയാൽ, പാറക്കെട്ടുകളോടുകൂടിയ അതിവിശാലമായ കുളക്കരയിൽ ഇളംകുളം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പേരിനെ അനുസരിച്ച്, ഏകദേശം ഒരു ഏക്കർ വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള വലിയ കുളം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുന്നിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ കുളം പാറക്കെട്ടുകളോടുകൂടിയതും പ്രകൃതിയുടെ സമ്പൂർണ്ണ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നതുമാണ്.
ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ ഇവിടെ പവിത്രമായ ഗംഗയായി ആരാധിക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളമാണ് ഇത്. ഒരു കാലത്ത് നാഗർകാവ് മാത്രമായിരുന്ന ഈ സ്ഥലത്ത്, ഋഷി തുല്യനും സിദ്ധനുമായ ഇടയാവണത്തു, മഠത്തിലെ ബ്രാഹ്മണ ശ്രേഷ്ഠൻ പൂജ നടത്തിയത് എന്ന വിശ്വാസം നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. കാവിലെ തീർത്ഥം സേവിച്ചാൽ മഹാരോഗങ്ങൾ മാറിയെന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. മഹാ മൃത്യുഞ്ജയ മൂർത്തിയായി വിരാജിക്കുന്ന ഇളംകുളം മഹാദേവന്റെ സവിധത്തിൽ, ഇത് ഇപ്പോഴും അതിശയോക്തികരമല്ല. മഹാദേവ ഭക്തനായ ബ്രാഹ്മണ ശ്രേഷ്ഠൻ, തെക്ക് ഭാഗത്തുള്ള ഒരു ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ സന്ധ്യാവന്ദനത്തിനു പോകുന്നത് പതിവായിരുന്നു. ഒരു ദിവസം, കാലിനുണ്ടായ അസുഖം മൂലം, പതിവ് ദീപാരാധനയ്ക്ക് എത്താൻ സാധിച്ചില്ല.
ഹൃദയ വേദനയോടെ, പ്രാർത്ഥനയോടെ, കഴിഞ്ഞ ബ്രാഹ്മണ ശ്രേഷ്ഠന്, നിത്യമായി പൂജിക്കുന്ന കാവിനു സമീപം മഹാദേവനെ ദർശിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുമെന്ന് സ്വപ്നം കാണാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. തൊട്ടടുത്ത ദിവസം, പുലർച്ചെ, വിശാലമായ കുളത്തിലെ പാറയിൽ സ്വയംഭുവായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു ആ ശിവലിംഗത്തെ പൂജിച്ചാരാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നും ആ സ്ഥാനമാണ് ഇളംകുളം ശ്രീമഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രമെന്നുമാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.
