Janardana Swami Temple | Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple Varkala Thiruvananthapuram

The temple is devoted to the veneration of the deity Vishnu, specifically in the manifestation of Janardanaswamy, who is commonly referred to as Varkaleswara in the local context. According to tradition, the devas established a temple dedicated to Vishnu at this site and engaged in worship of him in the form of Janardana. Janardanaswamy is depicted standing and oriented towards the east, with his right hand performing "Aachamanam" and raised towards his mouth. Legend holds that the world will meet its end when his hand reaches his mouth, an event anticipated to occur at the conclusion of the Kali Yuga.

The temple is situated on a plateau adjacent to the sea and is accessible via a lengthy staircase. The entrance to the inner sanctum is bordered by statues of Hanuman and Garuda on both sides. Within the main shrine resides the idol of Janardana, accompanied by Sridevi and Bhudevi. This principal idol is notable for its impressive form, featuring four arms that display the attributes of Vishnu. Additionally, the temple houses smaller shrines dedicated to Shiva, Ganesha, Shastha, and Naga devata. In the southwestern corner and the northeastern side of the outer enclosure, one can find the shrines of Sasta and Shiva, along with a statue of Nandi. This temple exemplifies the artistic and architectural traditions of Kerala. Key elements of the structure include the circular "sanctum sanctorum" topped with a conical dome made of copper sheets, the square mandapa adorned with wooden carvings of the Navagrahas on the ceiling and a copper-plated roof, the quadrangular enclosures (prakaram) surrounding these features, and a hall that contains a Bali Pitha situated in front of the inner temple. These characteristics are emblematic of Kerala architecture and the richly decorated temples found in South India.

The act of paying respects to departed souls and ancestors is a significant ritual at the temple. Each day, four poojas are performed. The chief priest of the temple is a Tulu Brahmin, who is not originally from the locality where the temple is situated. It is believed that the ancestors honored in this temple will find satisfaction, which may be the reason why Janardana is also referred to as 'Pitru Mokshakan'. Additionally, the temple serves as a prominent center for Ayurveda treatments. Annually, during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March–April), a ten-day Arattu festival is held at the Janardanaswamy Temple located in Varkala, a coastal town in Kerala. The festival commences with a flag hoisting ceremony known as Kodiyettam and concludes with a procession featuring five ornately decorated elephants parading through the streets. The temple also observes Karkidaka vavu (the Amavasya day in the month of Karkidakam, occurring in July or August) and Vaikuntha Ekadashi. Furthermore, the days of Thiruvonam star, Ekadashi, and Thursdays are regarded as significant, as these days are traditionally dedicated to Vishnu.

തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ വർക്കല താലൂക്കിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന തിരുവർക്കല ശ്രീ ജനാർദ്ദനസ്വാമി മഹാക്ഷേത്രം ഒരു പ്രശസ്തമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഇവിടെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ ഭഗവാൻ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവാണ്. ഭഗവാൻ വർക്കലേശ്വരൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ആറടി ഉയരമുള്ള ചതുർബാഹുവിഗ്രഹത്തിൽ, ലക്ഷ്മീദേവിയ്ക്കും ഭൂമീദേവിയ്ക്കുമൊപ്പം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമായാണ് ഭഗവദ്പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. കൂടാതെ, ശിവനും ഗണപതി, അയ്യപ്പൻ, ശ്രീരാമൻ, ഹനുമാൻ, നാഗദൈവങ്ങൾ എന്നിവരെയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ദക്ഷിണകാശി എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ദർശനം നടത്തുന്നത് ഐശ്വര്യവും ദുരിതമുക്തിയും മോക്ഷവും നൽകുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. അറബിക്കടലിന്റെ തീരത്ത് ഒരു കുന്നിന്റെ മുകളിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.

വൃത്താകൃതിയിലുള്ള വലിയ വട്ടശ്രീകോവിൽ ഈ സ്ഥലം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. കരിങ്കല്ലിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച ശ്രീകോവിലിന്റെ ചുറ്റളവ് ഏകദേശം നൂറടി ആണ്. മേൽക്കൂര ചെമ്പുമേഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു, മുകളിൽ സ്വർണ്ണത്താഴികക്കുടം മനോഹരമായി തെളിയിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീകോവിലിനകത്ത് മൂന്ന് മുറികളുണ്ട്, അവയിൽ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്ത് വിഗ്രഹം സ്ഥാപിച്ച ഗർഭഗൃഹം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ആറടിയിലധികം ഉയരമുള്ള ചതുർബാഹു വിഷ്ണുവിഗ്രഹം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനത്തിന് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. നിൽക്കുന്ന രൂപത്തിൽ അഞ്ജനശിലയിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച വിഗ്രഹം കാണാം. ചതുർബാഹുവായ വിഗ്രഹത്തിന്റെ പുറകിലെ വലതുകയ്യിൽ സുദർശനചക്രവും, ഇടതുകയ്യിൽ പാഞ്ചജന്യം ശംഖും, മുന്നിലെ ഇടതുകയ്യിൽ തലകീഴായി കൗമോദകി എന്ന ഗദയും ഉണ്ട്.

എന്നാൽ, മുന്നിലെ വലതുകയ്യിൽ താമരയ്ക്കു പകരം ഭിക്ഷപാത്രമാണ്. ഈ കൈ ഐതിഹ്യപ്രകാരം സ്വർണ്ണക്കയ്യാണ്.ഭഗവാന്റെ വലതുകൈ ഉയർത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ഐതിഹ്യം പറയുന്നത്, അത് വായ്ക്കടുത്തെത്തുമ്പോൾ ലോകത്തിന്റെ അവസാനമുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് വിശ്വാസമുണ്ട്. ഭഗവാന്റെ ഇടതുഭാഗത്ത് ശ്രീദേവി (ലക്ഷ്മി) ഉണ്ട്, വലതുഭാഗത്ത് ഭൂമീദേവി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ, പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുടെ മഹത്വം പതിന്മടങ്ങ് വർദ്ധിക്കുന്നു. വിശ്വപ്രകൃതിയുടെ മൂലതേജസ്സിനെ ആകർഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്, സാക്ഷാൽ ജനാർദ്ദനസ്വാമി ശ്രീ-ഭൂമീദേവിയോടൊപ്പം വർക്കലയിലെ ശ്രീലകത്ത് താമസിക്കുന്നു.
