Neelakandeswarar Temple (കൽക്കുളം അരുൾമിഗു നീലകണ്ഠേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം) is a Hindu shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, situated in Kalkulam, close to Padmanabhapuram in the Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu.
This temple stands out as the sole structure among the aforementioned twelve abodes of Lord Shiva that features a prominent gopuram (tower). Additionally, it is unique in having a dedicated Sanctum for the Goddess among these twelve temples. The architectural design of this temple reflects a harmonious blend of Tamil Nadu and Keralite styles. Annually, a tank festival is celebrated at the temple's water tank. Nallakantha Shivan was a devoted follower of the Lord worshipped here.
Situated at the base of the impressive Veli hill, the historic Padmanabhapuram palace complex is a testament to architectural excellence. This expansive complex, which includes multiple palaces, a treasury, administrative offices, temples, ponds, and guest accommodations, was transformed into a museum in 1935. Within the fortifications lies a notable settlement, its layout distinctly influenced by the caste-based social structure of the past.
കൽക്കുളം ശ്രീ നീലകണ്ഠേശ്വര ക്ഷേത്രം
പത്മനാഭപുരം നഗരം പഴയ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ സ്റ്റേറ്റിൽ ഉള്ള ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം, ഇപ്പോൾ കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ലയിലെ പത്മനാഭപുരം കൽക്കുളം താലൂക്കിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന നീലകണ്ഠ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. പത്മനാഭപുരം പട്ടണത്തിൽ ഭരിച്ച രാജാക്കന്മാരും തിരുമലയിൻ ആയക്കാർ പോലുള്ള മറ്റ് ഭരണാധികാരികളും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് നിരവധി സേവനങ്ങൾ നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തമിഴ്‌നാട്, കേരളീയ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുടെ സമന്വയമാണ്.
സ്വാതിതിരുനാളും കുഞ്ഞൻ നമ്പ്യാരും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ദക്ഷിണ കേരളത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രി നാളുകളിൽ ശിവാലയയോട്ടവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട 12 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം 7-ആം സ്ഥാനത്താണ്. മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മയുടെ കാലത്ത് നിർമ്മിച്ച ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ തഞ്ചാവൂർ ശില്പകലയുടെ സുന്ദര്യം പ്രകടമാണ്.
1നീലകണ്ടേശ്വരനായ മഹാദേവനും ദേവി ആനന്ദവല്ലിയും ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്‌ഠിതരാണ്. ഭർത്താവായ മഹാദേവൻ ശാന്തമായ രൂപത്തിൽ ഇവിടെ സന്നിഹിതനാണ്. വിശാലമായ ക്ഷേത്രക്കുളവും, നടുവിലെ ഒറ്റക്കൽ മണ്ഡപവും, ഏഴു നിലകളുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രവും മധുര മീനാക്ഷി ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. തിരുമലയ്നായ്ക്കരുടെ ഭരണകാലത്ത്, മധുര മീനാക്ഷിയെ ആനന്ദവല്ലിയായി ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്‌ഠിച്ചുവെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഉത്സവകാലത്ത് തേരോട്ടം നടക്കുന്ന ചില ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഇത്.
കുംഭ മാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രിയോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ആചാരമാണ് ശിവാലയ ഓട്ടം, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ “ചാലയം ഓട്ടം”. ശിവരാത്രി ദിനത്തിൽ ദ്വാദശ രുദ്രന്മാരെ വണങ്ങുക എന്നതാണ് ഈ ആചാരത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന സവിശേഷത. തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ലയിൽ, വിളവൻ‌കോട്, കൽക്കുളം താലൂക്കുകളിലെ 12 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒരു രാത്രി, ഒരു പകലിൽ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന ദർശനമാണ് ഇത്.
