Kappil Bhagavathy Temple is situated in the charming village of Kappil, approximately 8 kilometers from Varkala, within the Thiruvananthapuram district. This esteemed temple is devoted to Goddess Bhagavathy, who is also referred to as Parvati or Durga.
This temple is estimated to be over a millennium old and is recognized as one of the 108 Durga temples located in Kerala. Its tranquil environment and distinctive rituals contribute to its renown. The temple complex is enveloped by coconut palms and verdant foliage. It features the principal shrine dedicated to Bhagavathy, a subsidiary shrine for Lord Ganesh, a pond, a gopuram, and a mandapam. Positioned along the banks of Kappil Lake, which is linked to the Arabian Sea via a narrow channel, the temple provides a peaceful setting for worship.
Kappil Bhagavathy Temple is also known for its unique rituals and offerings, including the Thalappoli, where young girls carry lamps and rice while circumambulating the temple to invoke blessings from the Goddess for marriage and prosperity. Another significant ritual is the Thulabharam, which involves weighing oneself against items such as rice, sugar, or Jaggery, followed by a donation to the temple as a means of fulfilling vows or expressing gratitude to the Goddess. The temple annually celebrates a festival known as Meena Bharani. This event occurs during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April) and is regarded as one of the most significant festivals in the area. Throughout the festival, the main deity is paraded in a procession, while devotees present their prayers and offerings to the goddess.

വിവാഹത്തിനും സമൃദ്ധിയ്ക്കും വേണ്ടി ദേവിയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹം തേടുന്ന യുവതികൾ, കൈകളിൽ വിളക്കും അരിയും എന്തി, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ചുറ്റും നടത്തുന്ന താലപ്പൊലികൾ, കാപ്പിൽ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഭക്തർ അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നു. മറ്റൊരു ആചാരമായ തുലാഭാരത്തിൽ, നെല്ല്, പഞ്ചസാര, അരി, എണ്ണ, ശർക്കര തുടങ്ങിയവ, തങ്ങളുടെ തൂക്കത്തിന് സമാനമായ ദ്രവ്യങ്ങൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ വാർഷിക ഉത്സവമായ മീന ഭരണി ഉത്സവം വിപുലമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. മലയാള മാസമായ മീനത്തിൽ (മാർച്ച്-ഏപ്രിൽ) നടക്കുന്ന ഈ ഉത്സവം, ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഉത്സവങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ദേശവാസികൾ ഒത്തൊരുമയോടെ ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ദേശീയോത്സവമാണ് മീനഭരണി.ഉത്സവ സമയങ്ങളിലോ ദേവിയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹം ലഭിക്കുന്ന ചൊവ്വ, വെള്ളി ദിവസങ്ങളിലോ ക്ഷേത്ര ദർശനത്തിന് ഏറ്റവും അനുയോജ്യമായ സമയമാണ്.
