Kazhakoottam Shri Mahadeva Temple (കഴക്കൂട്ടം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം) is a historic Shiva temple situated in Kazhakoottam, within the Thiruvananthapuram district. It is recognized as one of the 108 Shiva Temples and holds the distinction of being an ancient Mahadeva Temple.
The deity of Lord Shiva is represented in this temple, where he is said to perform Ugratapassa following the Daksha Yaga. The Shiva Lingam here is notable for its impressive dimensions, standing at a height of 8¼ feet and a diameter of 5 feet, with only one-third of it visible to the worshippers, while the remaining two-thirds lies beneath the ground.
This temple boasts a rich and vibrant history, believed to have been established in the 14th century. Historical records indicate that a restoration took place in 1490, initiated by Veera Marthanda Varma.
However, the king passed away before the completion of the renovation, which was ultimately finished by his successor, Vira Kotha Marthanda Varma. The temple was constructed by Pantikannalan Mutthassari, the Chief Carpenter from Tirunelveli, along with skilled carpenters from Kerala. While the temple's architecture is relatively simple, the three-tiered copper-plated sanctum sanctorum and the Chuttambalam area, characterized by its steeply pitched tile roof, are particularly striking.
Spanning four and a half acres, the temple is among the largest in the region. The annual festival, lasting ten days, occurs in the month of Medam, commencing with Trikodiyettam and concluding with kodiyirakkam. The Palli vetta event takes place in a hunting field located one kilometer from the temple, while the Aarattu ceremony is conducted at the sea in Thumba, situated two kilometers to the west.
കഴക്കൂട്ടം ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
കഴക്കൂട്ടത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന പുരാതന ശിവക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കഴക്കൂട്ടം ശ്രീമഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. തിരുവനന്തപുരം നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 12 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്ക് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ശ്രീ മഹാദേവനു സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായ അതിപുരാതനമായ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ദക്ഷയാഗം കഴിഞ്ഞശേഷം ഉഗ്രതപസ്സനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്ന ശിവന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ഇവിടെ കാണാം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശിവലിംഗത്തിന് നിരവധി സവിശേഷതകൾ ഉണ്ട്. 8¼ അടി ഉയരവും 5 അടി വ്യാസവുമുള്ള ശിവലിംഗം വളരെ വലുതാണ്, ഭക്തർക്ക് മൂന്നിലൊന്ന് മാത്രം ദൃശ്യമാകുന്നു, മൂന്നു ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ രണ്ട് ഭാഗം ഭൂമിക്ക് താഴെയാണ്.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു ചരിത്രം ഉണ്ട്, പതിനാലാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥാപിച്ചതായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. 1490-ൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പുനരുദ്ധാരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടന്നതായി ചില രേഖകൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
വീര മാർത്താണ്ഡ വർമ്മയാണ് ഈ പുനരുദ്ധാരണത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത്. നവീകരണം പൂർത്തിയാകുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് രാജാവ് മരിച്ച ശേഷം, അടുത്ത രാജാവായ വീര കോത മാർത്താണ്ഡ വർമ്മ ഈ പ്രവർത്തനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. തിരുനെൽവേലിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള പാണ്ടിക്കണ്ണാളൻ മുത്താശ്ശാരിയും കേരളത്തിലെ ആശാരിമാരും ചേർന്ന് ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ വാസ്തുവിദ്യ ലളിതമായിരിക്കുമ്പോഴും, കുത്തനെ ചരിഞ്ഞ ഓടിട്ട മേൽക്കൂരയുള്ള ചുറ്റമ്പലവും, ചെമ്പുമേഞ്ഞ ത്രിതല ശ്രീകോവിലും അതിശയകരമായ കാഴ്ചകൾ കാണാം.
ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ നാലര ഏക്കർ വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം, ഭക്തരുടെ പ്രയാസങ്ങൾക്കും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾക്കും പരിഹാരമുണ്ടാക്കുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ, ധാരാളം ഭക്തർ ഇവിടെ എത്തി മഹാദേവന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം പ്രാപിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ 10 ദിവസത്തെ വാർഷികോത്സവം മേടമാസത്തിൽ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. തൃക്കൊടിയേറ്റത്തോടെ ആരംഭിച്ച്, കോടിയിറക്കത്തോടെ സമാപിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് അര കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള വേട്ടക്കളത്തിൽ പള്ളി വെട്ടയും, രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് തുമ്പയിലെ കടലിൽ ആറാട്ടും നടക്കുന്നു.
