Keezhperoor Chirakkarakavu Bhagavathy Temple, situated in Keezhperoor, Kilimanoor, Thiruvananthapuram, is an esteemed place of worship with considerable historical importance. This temple is devoted to the goddess Kaali.
The origins of this temple can be traced to a significant event in which the goddess revealed herself in the Koduvally River. It was later established by Chirakkkal Raja, the monarch of Kolathiri, and thus acquired the name Sree Chirakkakavu. Local folklore narrates that the goddess Kaali emerged at the azhimugham of Vamal, accompanied by her celestial entourage, from a palace located at the junction of the river and the sea. She manifested in the guise of a divine fish, and this site is now recognized as Vamal, the sacred Sree Moolasthana of Sree Chirakkakavu Bhagavathi.
Chirakkal Raja honored the goddess at this location and resolved to build the temple on Illikkunnu, which is believed to have been an ancient hermitage from a previous era. The temple is enveloped by verdant groves and possesses a rich history that spans at least 800 years. Recently, the Sreekovil, or inner sanctum, was renovated, and in the year 2000, a Punaprathishta ceremony was held, featuring the installation of the Astabandha Kalasam. The temple was formerly under the stewardship of Kizhakke Veedu Nair and is currently maintained by the following karas: Ponganadu, Keezhperoor, Vellaloor, Chandranelloor, and Muttachal. The principal festival celebrated at the temple is Kumbha Bharani.
തിരുവനന്തപുരം ജില്ലയിൽ കിളിമാനൂരിലെ കീഴ്പേരൂരിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ചിറക്കരകാവ് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം ചരിത്രപരമായ ഒരു പുണ്യസ്ഥലമാണ്. ത്രിഗുണാത്മികമായ മൂന്ന് രൂപങ്ങളിൽ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന കാളി ദേവിയെയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവം കൊടുവള്ളി നദിയിൽ ദേവി സ്വയം അവതരിച്ച ഒരു പുണ്യ സംഭവത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ്. പിന്നീട് കോലത്തിരി ഭരണാധികാരിയായിരുന്ന ചിറക്കൽ രാജാവാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചത്, അതിനാൽ ശ്രീ ചിറക്കാവ് എന്ന പേര് ലഭിച്ചു. പ്രാദേശിക ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ അനുസരിച്ച്, കാളി ദേവി വാമലിയുടെ അഴിമുഖത്തിൽ, അവളുടെ ദിവ്യ പരിവാരത്തോടൊപ്പം, നദിയുടെയും കടലിന്റെയും സംഗമസ്ഥാനത്ത് ഒരു കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ ഉയർന്നു. ദേവി ഒരു ദിവ്യ മത്സ്യത്തിന്റെ രൂപത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു, ഈ സ്ഥലം ഇപ്പോൾ ശ്രീ ചിറക്കാവ് ഭഗവതിയുടെ പവിത്രമായ ശ്രീമൂലസ്ഥാനമായി മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ചിറക്കൽ രാജാവ് ഈ സ്ഥലത്ത് ദേവിയെ ആരാധിക്കുകയും ഇല്ലിക്കുന്നിന് മുകളിൽ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു, ഇത് ഒരു പുരാതന ആശ്രമമായിട്ടാണ് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നത്. സമൃദ്ധമായ മരങ്ങളാൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് 800 വർഷത്തിലധികം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന സമ്പന്നമായ ചരിത്രം ഉണ്ട്. അടുത്തിടെ ശ്രീകോവിൽ നവീകരണം നടത്തി, 2000-ൽ അഷ്ടബന്ധകലശം സ്ഥാപിച്ച് പുനപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തി.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഒരിക്കൽ കിഴക്കേവീട് നായരുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ പോങ്ങനാട്, കീഴ്പേരൂർ, വെള്ളാളൂർ, ചന്ദ്രനെല്ലൂർ, മുട്ടച്ചൽ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ കരകൾ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പരിപാലനത്തിൽ ഏർപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം കുംഭഭരണിയാണ്.
