Kolathukara Mahadeva Temple is the sole temple within the enclosure that prohibits entry to devotees. It is situated in Kulathoor, near Kazhakoottam, in the Thiruvananthapuram district.
The deity worshipped at this temple is Mahadev, and the temple's surroundings radiate with the essence of Devi Chaitanya. Devotees hold the belief that prayers offered at this sacred site, where Lord Mahadev and Bhadrakali coexist, will lead to salvation and prosperity.
Historically, this site was solely dedicated to Bhadrakali, who was originally revered in the form of Raudrabhava. Subsequently, the idol of Mahadeva was established in her place. In 1893, Sree Narayana Guru conducted the consecration ceremony, marking Kolathukara as the third temple where Gurudev officiated.
The installation of Mahadeva at Kolathukara symbolized Gurudev's opposition to the practice of animal sacrifice that was prevalent in Bhadrakali temples at that time. According to legend, the goddess's spirit in this location is over six centuries old. This area was once a forest known as ‘Vishakkad,’ infamous for its reptilian pestilence. It is believed that the temple was constructed by migrants from Kolathunadu, which is present-day Malabar. These individuals came to this region to learn weaving, as it was a hub for the craft. Over time, Vishakkad evolved into Kolathukara, named after the builders of the temple. The temple eventually came under the stewardship of local residents after the Kolathunadu people returned from their weaving endeavors.
Despite the passage of time, the rituals, including animal sacrifice, persisted unchanged within the temple. Guru Sree Narayana visited the Bhadrakali temple in Kolathukara through Asan, a revered figure among the Gurus of Kulathur land, and became a frequent visitor. Following the consecration of the Anandavalleswara temple, the Guru and his disciple Kumaranashan sought to abolish the ongoing practices at the temple. The idol of Bhadrakali was removed from its worship site, and Mahadeva was installed in its place. However, the goddess's idol was not submerged; instead, its face was covered and it was positioned in the north-west corner of the enclosure.

കോലത്തുകര മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം, ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക് പ്രവേശനമില്ലാത്ത ഏക ക്ഷേത്രമായിട്ടാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ കഴക്കൂട്ടത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള കുളത്തൂരില്‍ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു, കൂടാതെ ഇത് ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. മഹാദേവന്റെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുണ്ടെങ്കിലും, ദേവീ ചൈതന്യവും equally prominent ആണ്, അതായത്, ഭദ്രകാളിയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ വളരെ പ്രധാനമാണ്. ഭക്തര്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നത്, മഹാദേവനും ഭദ്രകാളിയും ചേർന്ന് വാഴുന്ന ഈ തിരുനടയിലെത്തി പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചാല്‍ ഫലസിദ്ധി ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് ആണ്.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം വളരെ രസകരമാണ്. ഇതിനു മുമ്പ്, ഈ സ്ഥലം ഭദ്രകാളി ക്ഷേത്രമായിരുന്നു, എന്ന് ചരിത്രം പറയുന്നു. അന്നത്തെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ രൗദ്രഭാവത്തിലുള്ള ഭദ്രകാളിയായിരുന്നു, അതിനാല്‍ ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ ആത്മാവ് ശക്തമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട്, ഈ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ മാറ്റി മഹാദേവന്റെ വിഗ്രഹം സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു, ഇത് ഭക്തര്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ വലിയ മാറ്റം ഉണ്ടാക്കി. 1893-ല്‍ ശ്രീനാരായണ ഗുരുവാണ് ഈ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയത്, ഗുരുദേവന്‍ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളില്‍ മൂന്നാമത്തേതാണ് കോലത്തുകര.
