Koovalassery Sree Mahadevar Temple, one of Southern Travancore's oldest temples, is located in Neyyattinkara Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District.
Koovalassery Mahadeva Temple (കൂവളശ്ശേരി മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം) is located in the village of Koovalassery, approximately 7 kilometers north of Neyyattinkara Town along the Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari Highway in Kerala. This ancient and esteemed temple is situated within Neyyattinkara Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, and has historical ties to the Travancore Royal Family. The temple is administered by the Munchira Madom, which serves as its trustee. The name "Koovalassery" is derived from the prevalence of Koovala trees (Bael), a sacred tree in Hinduism and favored by Lord Mahadeva, that once thrived in the area. Originally referred to as "Koovalachery," the name gradually transformed into Koovalassery.
The temple is positioned about 200 meters east of the main road, offering a tranquil and spiritual environment. The annual festival commences on the day of the Pooyam star in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February-March) and concludes after ten days with the sacred Aarattu (holy bath) ceremony. The temple's chief priest, or Thantri, is Sree Parameswaran Namboothiri of the Tharananalloor Mana. A stone mandapam (hall) is located approximately 30 meters from the main road, which was historically utilized for special worship rites involving the presentation of a holy pot; however, these practices have ceased over time. In the southwest corner of the temple, there was once a math (hermitage) where devotees congregated for chants and prayers, but it has fallen into disrepair due to inadequate maintenance.
This centuries-old Mahadeva temple underwent extensive renovation due to its deteriorated condition. With the blessings of Lord Parameswara and the generous contributions of devotees and temple authorities, the essential construction work has been completed, enhancing the temple's atmosphere to be more devotional and aesthetically pleasing.
കൂവളശ്ശേരി മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം
തിരുവനന്തപുരം-കന്യാകുമാരി ഹൈവേയിലെ നെയ്യാറ്റിൻകര ടൗണിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 7.4 കിലോമീറ്റർ വടക്ക് മാറി കൂവളശ്ശേരി ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ കൂവളശ്ശേരി മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇത് തിരുവിതാംകൂർ രാജകുടുംബവുമായി ബന്ധമുള്ള പുരാതനവും ആദരണീയവുമായ ക്ഷേത്രമാണിത്. ഹിന്ദുമതത്തിലെ പുണ്യവൃക്ഷമായ കൂവളമരങ്ങൾ (Bael) ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനോടടുത്ത് വളരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് "കൂവളശ്ശേരി" എന്ന പേര് വന്നത്, തുടക്കത്തിൽ "കൂവളച്ചേരി" എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഈ പേര് പിന്നീട് കൂവളശ്ശേരി ആയി മാറി.
പ്രധാന റോഡിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 200 മീറ്റർ കിഴക്കായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ശാന്തവും ആത്മീയവുമായ അന്തരീക്ഷം പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഭഗവാന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹത്താൽ ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടേയും ക്ഷേത്രപരിപാലകരുടേയും സഹകരണത്താൽ, മോശമായ അവസ്ഥയിലായിരുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രം പുനർനിർമാണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു, waardoor ക്ഷേത്രം കൂടുതൽ ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രവും മനോഹരവുമാക്കുവാൻ സാധിച്ചു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് സമീപമുള്ള കുളത്തിൽ, മനോഹരമായി നിർമ്മിച്ച ആറാട്ട് മണ്ഡപവും സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. വാർഷിക ഉത്സവം കുംഭമാസത്തിൽ (ഫെബ്രുവരി-മാർച്ച്) പൂയം നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ തൃക്കൊടിയേറ്റത്തോടെ ആരംഭിച്ച്, 10 ദിവസങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ആറാട്ട് മണ്ഡപത്തിൽ തിരുആറാട്ട് ചടങ്ങോടെ സമാപിക്കുന്നു.
പരമേശ്വരൻ നമ്പൂതിരി തന്ത്രി ആയുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കൽമണ്ഡപം, പുരാതനകാലത്ത് പൂജാ ചടങ്ങുകൾക്ക് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധമായ സ്ഥലം ആയിരുന്നു, എന്നാൽ വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുശേഷം ഈ രീതികൾ അവസാനിച്ചു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഒരു മഠം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, അവിടെ ഭക്തർ ഒരുകാലത്ത് മന്ത്രോച്ചാരണങ്ങൾക്കും പ്രാർത്ഥനകൾക്കുമായി ഒത്തുകൂടിയിരുന്നു, പക്ഷേ, അറ്റകുറ്റപ്പണികൾ സങ്കേതത്തിൽ നടക്കാത്തതിനാൽ അത് ജീർണാവസ്ഥയിൽ എത്തി.
കർക്കടക വാവുബലിക്കായി നിരവധി ഭക്തർ പിതൃ തർപ്പണം അർപ്പിക്കാൻ കൂവളശ്ശേരി ശ്രീ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തുന്നതും വിശേഷമാണ്.
