Kunnathu Sri Mahadeva Temple (കുന്നത്ത് മഹാദേവർ ക്ഷേത്രം) is situated in Kudappanakunnu within the Thiruvananthapuram district. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is enshrined in distinct sanctum sanctorums oriented towards the east.
This temple is regarded as one of the 108 Shiva temples in Kerala, established by the sage Parasurama in honor of Lord Shiva. It is situated near the Kudappanakkunnu Civil Station along the Peroorkada-Mannanthala road.
Kunnath Sri Mahadev Temple is an ancient site located in a wooded area approximately 1.5 kilometers from the urban center of Kudappanakunnu. Covering an area of 5 acres, this temple is enveloped by a dense forest, believed to be the sacred ‘Jada’ of Lord Shri Parameswaran. Devaprashna has confirmed that numerous revered sages have engaged in penance on this hallowed ground, enhancing the sanctity of the Devasthanam. The thick canopy of trees is so dense that sunlight scarcely penetrates even at noon, creating a unique atmosphere. The temple is perched on a hill, approximately 500 meters above sea level, housing the Swayambhu Lingam of Sri Kunnathappan. The sanctum sanctorum, dedicated to the tranquil Maheshwaran, also features subdeities of Lord Ganesha and the Nagars located slightly to the west. Devaprashnam has also indicated the presence of Sri Parvati in the deity. Historically, the temple and its vicinity were under the stewardship of Kunnath Mana, which was home to many Brahmin nobles. Currently, the administrative responsibilities are managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The temple grounds also contain several rocks resembling Shivalinga.
Shivaratri is the principal festival celebrated at the temple. On this auspicious day, numerous devotees from surrounding areas gather for Yama Pooja, with five Yama Pujas conducted during the event. It is believed that participating in these five Yama Pujas is equivalent to observing a thousand Somavara-vruthams, and even attending a single Yama Puja is considered highly auspicious. Additionally, Thiruvathira day in the month of Sagittarius is celebrated with great reverence, featuring Rudra Japa and particularly Mrithyunjaya Pujas performed at the temple.

കുടപ്പനക്കുന്ന് കുന്നത്ത് മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം, തിരുവനന്തപുരം നഗരത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു അതിപുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. (കുന്നപ്പുറം, കുന്നത്ത്കാവ്) തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തുനിന്നും പേരൂർക്കട - മണ്ണന്തല റൂട്ടിൽ, കുടപ്പനക്കുന്ന് സിവിൽ സ്റ്റേഷനു സമീപം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. കുന്നിന്റെ മുകളിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം 'കുന്നത്ത്' എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്, കൂടാതെ നൂറ്റെട്ട് ശിവാലയ നാമാവലിയിൽ 'കുന്നപ്രം' എന്ന പേരും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. പരശുരാമൻ ശിവലിംഗപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയ 108 ശിവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായാണ് കുടപ്പനക്കുന്ന് മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.
വനനിബിഡമായ പ്രദേശത്താണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. 5 ഏക്കറിന് മുകളിൽ വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ള ഈ ഭൂപ്രദേശം, ഭസ്മാങ്കിതനായ ശ്രീ പരമേശ്വരന്റെ ജഡയെന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന നിബിഡ വനങ്ങളാൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
ഒരു കുന്നിന്റെ മുകളിലെ ഏകദേശം 500 മീറ്റർ ഉയരത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇത്. ശ്രീ കുന്നത്തപ്പന്റെ സ്വയംഭൂ ലിംഗം ഇവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മഹേശ്വരന്റെ ശാന്തസ്വരൂപം ധ്യാനാവസ്ഥയിൽ ഉള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രസങ്കേതത്തിൽ ഗണപതിയും ശാസ്താവും, കുറച്ച് പടിഞ്ഞാറുമാറി നാഗരവും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ദേവപ്രശ്നത്തിൽ ശ്രീ പാർവ്വതിയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഇവിടെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭരണകാര്യങ്ങൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരത്ത് ശിവലിംഗത്തിന് സമാനമായ നിരവധി ശിലകൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആഘോഷം ശിവരാത്രിയാണ്. ശിവരാത്രി ദിനത്തിൽ സമീപ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള നിരവധി ഭക്തർ ഇവിടെ യാമപൂജയ്ക്കായി എത്തുന്നു. ഇവിടെ 5 യാമപൂജകൾ നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.
