Malayinkeezhu Srikrishna Swamy Temple holds significant historical and cultural importance, not only for Thiruvananthapuram but for the entire state of Kerala. This temple, which boasts a rich tradition spanning over 1500 years, is a prominent Devasthanam in the region.
Malayinkeezhu Srikrishna Swamy Temple stands as one of the most significant temples in Thiruvananthapuram. It is believed that this temple, which may date back to the same era as the Sri Padmanabha Swami Temple, existed even prior to the commencement of the Malayalam Era. There is a perceived connection between the deities worshipped here and the temples themselves.
The temple's history is intertwined with the story of Vilvamangalam Swamiyar, a devoted follower of Vishnu, who experienced a vision of Lord Krishna. In this vision, he saw an idol from Dwarka floating in water, destined for worship. The following day, while bathing in the river, he discovered this exquisite idol. He subsequently constructed a temple in Thiruvalla to house it. However, the night before the temple's inauguration, Krishna appeared to him in a dream, instructing him to establish the temple not in Thiruvalla, but in the valley of hills at Malayinkeezhu. Thus, it is believed that Swamiyar installed the idol in the Malayinkeezhu temple. To this day, the deity is affectionately referred to as ‘Thiruvallazhappan’. Historical records suggest a profound connection between the Thiruvalla temple and the Malayinkeezhu temple even during that period.
The Malayinkeezhu Temple is also deeply linked to Malayalam literature. It is here that Kannassageetha was born, and it is said that the poet Madhavapanikkar composed the Bhagavad Gita at this temple before the renowned scholar Ezhuthchan. Additionally, Malayinkeezhu Madhavan is credited with translating the Bhagavad Gita into Malayalam.
One of the most celebrated Tharattu songs in Malayalam, Omanathingal Kitao, is associated with this temple. Kuttikunju Thangachi, the daughter of Iriyammanthambi, the lord of Tharattu, had a special fondness for Malayinkeezhu Krishnan, despite residing in the northern courtyard of the Padmanabha Swamy temple. This temple was once a favored place of worship for many residents of Thiruvananthapuram.
