Sree Markandeya Dharma Sastha Temple, situated on Kallampally Street in Vazhapally, Fort, Thiruvananthapuram, is commonly referred to as the Kallampally Sastha Temple. This historic and renowned temple is one of the prominent spiritual landmarks in Thiruvananthapuram City.
The distinctive feature of this temple lies in the main sreekovil, which houses the prathishtas of Sastha and Siva, along with a Sivalinga positioned in the right hand of Sri Sastha. It is believed that Sastha is engaged in the worship of Siva, leading to the deity being referred to as ‘Markandeswaran.’ Consequently, rituals aimed at alleviating sanidosha, such as neeranjanam and saneeswara homam, are considered particularly effective. Furthermore, the presence of the devi prathishta in the rajarajeswari bhavam, along with the ganapathy prathista for the removal of obstacles and the navagraha prathishtas for addressing graha dosha, enhances the spiritual energy and significance of this temple. This ancient site underwent renovation in 2010, following the guidance of the temple acharyas, which included the reconstruction of the upadevalayas and the punaprathishta of the devi and ganapathy idols, as well as the installation of new navagraha prathishta.
Historically, it has been believed that engaging in bhajana at this temple can eliminate sanidosha. This belief is rooted in the understanding that both sastha bhajan and siva bhajana serve as effective remedies for sanidosha. The two powerful sivalingas located in the sreekovil and kaliyuga varada sri dharma sastha are said to bestow prosperity upon devotees, and through their divine grace, all forms of sanidosha are believed to dissipate. Thus, rituals such as saniswara homam, kiratharchana, neerajanam, and Pradosha abhishekam are thought to effectively dispel sanidosha.
In the Kallampalli Sri Dharma Sastha temple, the Devi chaithanyam is embodied in Sri Rajarajeswari Bhava. The current vigraha is crafted from wood. Rajarajeswari Devi is regarded as the giver of all auspiciousness, prosperity, and the remover of troubles. Offerings to the devi, including silk cloth (Pattu), bangles, thali, and the performance of raktha pushpanjali archana, swayamvararchana, powrnami pooja, and Bhagavath Seva, are reported to be highly beneficial, according to those who have experienced their effects.

ശ്രീധർമ്മശാസ്താവിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യംകൊണ്ട് അനുഗ്രഹീതമാണ് തിരുവനന്തപുരം കോട്ടക്കുള്ള വാഴപ്പള്ളി കല്ലമ്പള്ളി തെരുവിലെ മാർക്കണ്ഡേയ ശ്രീ ധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം. കലിയുഗവരദനായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ശാസ്താവ് ഭക്തന്മാർക്ക് അഭീഷ്ടസിദ്ധി നൽകുന്നവനായി വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇക്കാര്യത്തിൽ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ പല പ്രത്യക്ഷ ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുമുണ്ട്.
ഹൈന്ദവ പുരാണങ്ങളിൽ ദൈവസങ്കൽപ്പത്തിൻറെ മഹിമ നിരവധി തലങ്ങളിൽ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങളോടെ പ്രകടമായിരിക്കുന്നു. മനസിനെ സമാധാനത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ച് ഭക്തിജീവിതത്തിന് പ്രാധാന്യമേകുന്ന ഈ സങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങൾ ഭക്തന്മാർക്ക് ഉദ്ദിഷ്ടസിദ്ധി നേടാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ ക്ഷേത്രാരാധനകളുടെ വിവിധതരം ആചാരങ്ങളും ദൈവ സങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങളും അതിമനോഹരവും ആത്മീയമായി പ്രബലവുമാണ്. കല്ലമ്പള്ളി ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം ഇതിന്റെ ഉദാഹരണമാണ്.
ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രധാന ശ്രീകോവിലിൽ ശാസ്താവും ശിവനും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതരായിരിക്കുന്നു. ശാസ്താവ് ധ്യാനാസനത്തിൽ ശിവലിംഗം കൈയിൽ പിടിച്ച്, വലതുകാൽ മടക്കി ശരീരത്തോട് ചേർത്ത്, മറ്റേ കൈ താഴേക്കിട്ട് സമാധാനകരമായ നിലയിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷമാണ്.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ത്രിവാതിര ശിവരാത്രി, ശബരിമല സീസൺ എന്നിവയിൽ ഭക്തരുടെ വലിയ ഓർമയിൽ നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നു. ശാസ്താവ് ശിവനെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു എന്ന വിശ്വാസം, ഈ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയെ "മാർക്കണ്ഡേശ്വരൻ" എന്ന് വിളിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഇടയാക്കി. ഇതുകൊണ്ട് ശനിദോഷം പരിഹരിക്കുന്ന പൂജകളും ശനീശ്വര ഹോമങ്ങളും പുണ്യപ്രദമാകുന്നു.
ദേവിയുടെ രാജരാജേശ്വരി ഭാവത്തിലുള്ള ചൈതന്യവും, ഗണപതി വിഗ്രഹം, ശാസ്താവിന്റെയും ശിവന്റെയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളുമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണം.
