Melattingal Siva Temple, മേലാറ്റിങ്ങല്‍ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം located 1 km from Poovanpara Bridge near Attingal in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a renowned shrine dedicated to Lord Siva (Mahadevan). The temple's circular Srikovil is a fine example of ancient architecture, making it a significant spiritual and historical site in South India.
The primary offerings of Melattingal Mahadevan include the performance of Dravya Kalasa and Nava Kalasa poojas, accompanied by the recitation of Veda Manthras. To the west of this Mandapa, there is a Nandi sculpted from a single stone. By traversing the stone-paved inner pathway, one arrives at the Sreekovil, also known as The Holy of Holies of Shree Melattingal Mahadevan; Vaikkathappan, the Annadana Prabhu who fulfills the desires of His devotees. The Sreekovil, or main inner sanctum, is circular and consists of two chambers. The first chamber, the Mukha Mandapa, is constructed from circular stone, while the second chamber, the Garbha Griha (Sanctum Sanctorum), is entirely made of stone, including the roof, and is square in shape. In the center of this chamber lies a Peedhom, or platform, approximately one foot high.
Upon this Peedhom rests the most sacred, renowned, and esteemed Siva Linga of SHREE VAIKKATHAPPAN, consecrated as MELATTINGAL MAHADEVAN. The Linga is embellished with a crescent (Chandrakala), three eyes, a nose, and four hands in a meditative pose, adorned with Saiva abharanams (ornaments); on the left side are the Shoolam, Vajram Sward, Parasu, and Abhaya mudras, while the right side features Nagam, pasham, damaru, and Pralayam. Within the Holy of Holies, only oil and ghee lamps are lit, accompanied by camphor, creating a celestial ambiance. The sight of this most sacred Linga brings fulfillment to the hundreds of thousands of devotees who recite various Sivasthuthis.
