Sri Maha Ganapathi Temple is a renowned Hindu temple located in the historic town of Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad district, Kerala, India. It is one of the oldest temples in the region and a prominent attraction of Sulthan Bathery.
Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the temple is believed to have been built around eight centuries ago. According to popular belief, the town of Sulthan Bathery was once known as 'Ganapathyvattom' due to the presence of this sacred shrine. The temple has a rich historical background and was once under the administration of the Kottayam royal dynasty.
It is said that Tipu Sultan destroyed the original structure and later renovated it, reportedly using stones from the temple to build a fort in the area. After Tipu Sultan's conquest, the town came to be known as Sultan Bathery. During the rule of the Kulasekhara kings, the town was also referred to as Purakizha.
The temple hosts an annual eight-day festival during January or February, attracting a large number of devotees. The celebrations feature a range of traditional cultural programs such as Chakyarkoothu and Ottanthullal.
Kalampattu is performed on the third and fourth days, while the final day sees a grand procession with the idol of Lord Ganesha accompanied by beautifully decorated elephants.
In addition to the main deity Lord Ganesha, the temple also enshrines Lord Shiva, Naga, Lord Ayyappa, and Goddess Bhagavathi.
ബത്തേരി മഹാഗണപതി ക്ഷേത്രം
ഗണപതിവട്ടം എന്ന പേരിൽ പഴകിയ സുൽത്താൻ ബത്തേരിയിലാണ് പ്രശസ്തമായ ബത്തേരി മഹാഗണപതി ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ശ്രീ മഹാഗണപതിക്ക് സമർപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ശോഭയുള്ള ശ്രീകോവിലോടൊപ്പം കിഴക്കോട്ടു ദർശനമായ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഗണപതി ഭഗവാന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യത്തിൽ കുലപതികളെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നു.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നാലുപൂജയും ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളും നിത്യശുചിത്വത്തോടും ഭക്തിപൂർവവുമുള്ള രീതിയിലും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ തന്ത്രീ സ്ഥാനം കോഴിക്കോട്ടിരി മനക്കലേക്കാണ്.
ശ്രീ മഹാഗണപതിയോടൊപ്പം ഉപദേവതകളായി ശ്രീമഹാദേവൻ, അയ്യപ്പൻ, നാഗദേവതയും ഭഗവതിയും ഈ ദേവാലയത്തിൽ ആരാധനാക്രമത്തിലാണ്.
മകരമാസത്തിലാണ് ഉത്സവാഘോഷം. മകരം പതിനഞ്ചിന് കൊടിയേറ്റ് തുടങ്ങുന്ന ഉത്സവം ആറുദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്നു. ഭക്തജനങ്ങളുടെ വലിയ പങ്കാളിത്തം കൊണ്ട് ഉത്സവം ഭംഗിയായി നടപ്പിലാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.
ഗണപതിക്ക് അപ്പവും ഗണപതി ഹോമവും പ്രധാന വഴിപാടുകളായി ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ജലാഭിഷേക വഴിപാട് നടത്തിയാൽ മഴ പെയ്യുമെന്നതാണ് ക്ഷേത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള ജനവിശ്വാസം.
