In Panamaram panchayat of Wayanad district, near Kuppathode on the Kalpetta–Thirunelli route, lies the Eranellur Sree Lakshmi Narasimha Moorthy Temple.
The main deity is Lakshmi Narasimha Moorthy, facing east. The temple also has sub-deities: Venkateswara and Padmavathi. Worship is conducted three times a day by priests from the Ayyankara lineage. This is a village temple of the Vaishnava Gowda community, who migrated and settled in Wayanad.
The temple celebrates Uthana Ekadashi with devotion.
Currently, it functions under the administration of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department and is part of the Mananthavady sub-group. The presiding deity, Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, is worshipped as a combination of strength (Narasimha) and compassion (Lakshmi), offering devotees both protection and prosperity. The temple is revered by devotees who seek relief from fear, protection from enemies, and blessings for a righteous life.
Panamaram is historically significant for its role during the Pazhassi rebellion. In 1802, the Kurichya warriors under the leadership of Thalakkal Chanthu captured the Panamaram Fort, killed all the British soldiers stationed there, and seized their weapons and ammunition. The fort was then demolished and reduced to rubble — a landmark moment in Kerala’s anti-colonial struggle.
എരനെല്ലൂർ ലക്ഷ്മിനരസിംഹ ക്ഷേത്രം
വയനാട് ജില്ലയിലെ പനമരം പഞ്ചായത്തിലെ കുപ്പത്തോട് എന്നിടത്ത്, കല്പറ്റ–തിരുനെല്ലി റൂട്ടിലാണു സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത് എരനെല്ലൂർ ശ്രീ ലക്ഷ്മി നരസിംഹമൂർത്തി ക്ഷേത്രം. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ലക്ഷ്മി നരസിംഹമൂർത്തിയാണ്, കിഴക്കോട്ടു ദർശനത്തോടെ. വെങ്കിടേശ്വരനും പദ്മാവതിയുമാണ് ഉപദേവതകൾ. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദിവസത്തിൽ മൂന്ന് നേരം പൂജകൾ നടക്കുന്നു.
പൂജാരിയായുള്ള സേവനം അയ്യൻകാര സമുദായം നിർവഹിക്കുന്നു.വയനാട്ടിലേക്ക് കുടിയേറി പാർത്ത വൈഷ്ണവ ഗൗഢന്മാരുടെ ഗ്രാമക്ഷേത്രമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഉത്താന ഏകാദശി വലിയ ഉത്സവമായി ആചരിക്കുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ ക്ഷേത്രം ഹിന്ദു റിലിജ്യസ് ആൻഡ് ചാരിറ്റബിൾ എൻഡോവ്മെന്റ്സ് (HR&CE) വകുപ്പിന്റെ കീഴിലാണുള്ളത്. ഇത് മാനന്തവാടി ഉപഗ്രൂപ്പിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.ഇതിനടുത്ത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന മറ്റൊരു എരനെല്ലൂർ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രം, തൃശൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ ചെറുവത്തൂർ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെ മനക്കാരുടേതാണ്.
ആ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ദിവസത്തിൽ ഒരു നേരം മാത്രം പൂജ നടക്കുന്നു.
പനമരം പ്രദേശം പഴശ്ശിരാജാവിന്റെ കാലത്തെ പോരാട്ടങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് ചരിത്രപ്രസിദ്ധമാണ്. 1802-ൽ, തലയ്ക്കൽ ചന്തുവിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള കുറിച്യർ പട്ടാളം, പനമരം കോട്ട പിടിച്ചെടുത്ത് എല്ലാ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സൈനികരെയും വധിക്കുകയും, തോക്കും ഗൺപൗഡറും കൈവശപ്പെടുത്തുകയും, കോട്ട തകർത്തു തരിപ്പണമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്നതാണു ചരിത്രരേഖകളിലുള്ളത്.
