Malakkari Shiva Temple is an ancient temple located in Wayanad district.
The temple does not have elaborate temple complexes, circumambulatory paths, or traditional front halls adorned with intricate architecture. Instead, it is a shrine where the Kurichya tribal community continues to worship with deep devotion, holding firmly to their beliefs and customs without any deviation from their traditional rituals.
Across Kerala, there are many temples that are worshipped by the Kurichya community.
Since the Kurichyas are predominantly based in Wayanad district, this temple holds special significance. The Malakkari Shiva Temple is situated 16.5 kilometers (about 29 minutes) from Mananthavady via the Ambalavayal–Pallikkal Road, and just a 10-minute (4.5-kilometer) drive from Vellamunda in Wayanad. Historically, this was one of the main temples for the Kurichya tribal community in Wayanad. The presiding deity is Malakkari Shiva, believed to be a form of "Malakkari Shivashakti."
The idol faces east. The temple follows a one-time daily pooja (ritual offering).
Malakkari Thira festival is celebrated during the dates of Kumbham 1 and 2 (Malayalam calendar). The Thira ritual is held on a traditional chariot (theru), which is pulled by Kurichyas who undertake a 41-day vow (vratham). A special rule followed here is that no elephants are allowed for the festival. During Moolam star in the month of Kumbham, offerings of toddy (kallu) are made.
The temple has recently been renovated and rebuilt. It is a small yet spiritually significant temple.
മലക്കാരി ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രം
മലക്കാരി ശിവക്ഷേത്രം വയനാട് ജില്ലയിലെ വളരെ പഴയ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഇതിന് വാസ്തുശില്പകലയിൽ ആധുനിക സവിശേഷതകളായ വലിയ ക്ഷേത്രസമുച്ചയങ്ങളോ ചുറ്റമ്പലമോ മുഖമണ്ഡപങ്ങളോ ഇല്ല. തങ്ങളുടെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങളെ ആത്മാർത്ഥതയോടെ പറ്റിപ്പിടിച്ച്, ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളിൽ വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ കുറിച്യർ ആദരണയോടെ ആരാധിച്ചുപോരുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇത്.
കേരളംതന്നെ മുഴുവൻ കുറിച്യ സമുദായം ആരാധിക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്.
എന്നാൽ വയനാട് ജില്ലയെ കുറിച്യരുടെ പ്രധാന ആസ്ഥാനമാക്കി കണക്കാക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്.മാനന്തവാടിയിൽ നിന്ന് അമ്പലവയൽ–പള്ളിക്കൽ റോഡ് വഴി 16.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ (ഏകദേശം 29 മിനിറ്റ്) യാത്രചെയ്താലോ, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വയനാട് വെള്ളമുണ്ടയിൽ നിന്നു 4.5 കിലോമീറ്റർ (ഏകദേശം 10 മിനിറ്റ്) യാത്രചെയ്താലോ, മലക്കാരി ശിവക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരാം.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം കിഴക്കോട്ട് ദർശനമുള്ളതും ഒരുനേരം മാത്രമാണ് പൂജ നടക്കുന്നതും ആണു. പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായിട്ടുള്ളത് മലക്കാരി ശിവനാണ് — എന്നാൽ ഭക്തജനങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ "മലക്കാരി ശിവശക്തി" എന്ന വിശ്വാസത്തോടെയാണ് ആരാധിക്കുന്നത്.
പ്രതിവർഷം കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ഒന്ന്, രണ്ട് തീയതികളിൽ മലക്കാരി തിറ ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. തിറ തേരിലാണ് നടത്തുന്നത്. കുറിച്യർ 41 ദിവസത്തെ വ്രതം പാലിച്ച് തേരു വലിക്കുന്നതാണ് പ്രധാന ആചാരം. ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ആന ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ അനുവദനില്ലെന്നത് ഒരു കർശനരീതിയാണ്.
കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ മുളം നാളിൽ കള്ള് നിവേദ്യം നൽകുന്നത് ഉത്സവത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടอีก പ്രധാന ചടങ്ങാണ്. പുതിയതായി പുനർനിർമിച്ച ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ചെറുതായാണെങ്കിലും ആത്മീയമായ മഹത്വം നിറഞ്ഞതാണ്.
പണ്ടുകാലങ്ങളിൽ മറ്റൊരു ആദിവാസി വർഗ്ഗമായ പണിയർക്കു ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രവേശനമില്ലായിരുന്നു എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
