Thirunelly is a tranquil village nestled at the foothills of the Brahmagiri Hills, located about 30 km from Mananthavady in Wayanad.
To reach Papanashini from Thirunelli, one must travel through rugged paths. On this journey, a temple that every traveler encounters is the Gundika Temple. It is a cave temple, situated amidst pristine forests and flowing mountain streams, radiating a unique spiritual energy.
Inside the temple, one can see a single oil lamp burning steadily. There is also a Shiva Linga installed within.
One of the temple’s most striking sights is the way devotees stack stones together as a form of prayer—believed to be inspired by the prayer wheels of Buddhist monks.
Gundika Temple is also linked to the famous Kottiyoor Temple. It is believed to be not just a cave temple, but also an ancient underground passage. According to legend, there once existed a route from this cave that led directly to Kottiyoor, which over time got buried under earth and is no longer accessible.

തിരുനെല്ലിയിൽ നിന്നും പാപനാശിനിയിലേയ്ക്ക് എത്താൻ കഴിയും വഴി കഠിനവും കാട്ടുമാർഗ്ഗവുമാണ്. ഈ പാതയിലൂടെ യാത്രചെയ്യുന്നവർ ഏറെയും ദർശിക്കാറുള്ളത് ഗുണ്ടിക ക്ഷേത്രത്തെയാണ്. ഇത് ഒരു ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രമാണ് — ശുദ്ധിയുടെയും ശാന്തിയുടെയും പ്രതീകമായ കാനനം, കാട്ടാർ എന്നിവയുടെ നടുവിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന, പ്രത്യേക ചൈതന്യമുള്ള ഒരു ദൈവസന്നിധി.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനകത്ത് ദീപം തെളിയുന്ന ദൃശ്യവും ശിവലിംഗപ്രതിഷ്ഠയും കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്നു.
മറ്റൊരു മനോഹര ദൃശ്യമായി ഭക്തർ ശിലകൾ അടുക്കി വെച്ച് പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്ന രീതി ഇവിടെ കാണാം. ബുദ്ധസന്യാസിമാരുടെ പ്രാർത്ഥനാ ചക്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഇതിന് പ്രചോദനം ലഭിച്ചതെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഗുണ്ടിക ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രശസ്തമായ കൊട്ടിയൂർ ക്ഷേത്രത്തോടും ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇത് ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രം മാത്രമല്ല, തുരങ്കം കൂടിയാണ് എന്നാണ് പാരമ്പര്യവിശ്വാസം. ഒരിക്കൽ ഈ തുരങ്കം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് തത്സമയം കൊട്ടിയൂരിൽ എത്താൻ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നു എന്നും, കാലപ്പഴക്കത്തിൽ തുരങ്കം മണ്ണ് മൂടി അടഞ്ഞുപോയതായും വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
